Crusty bread maker |
This is back to the future. We purchased this Dutch Oven specifically to bake crusty bread and this works marvelously. The kettle is well made and best of all, it comes preseasoned, so no fear of getting this to work without the bread dough sticking in the kettle. Did I mention the great price?

I did SO much research before getting this dutch oven, and finally took the plunge based on all the other excellent reviews about this product. The best thing is that all of those reviewers with the high praise were RIGHT... this Dutch Oven is really AS good as they made it sound! I HIGHLY recommend it!! It's SOLID and a pleasure to cook in! |

We wanted a dutch oven with a good lid so we could bake Mark Bitman's no-knead bread. This requires baking at high temperatures (450-500 degrees). After looking at options ranging as much as $250, we ordered this cast iron dutch oven. Out of the box it was cured pretty well, the lid fits nicely and the spiral handle is cleverly engineered. It works perfectly, and the price is right. It is quite heavy, but that's what holds all that heat. |

so far i have made christmas gumbo and new years cabbage dishes. it is such a pure pleasure to work with the pot that it brings out the best in the cook. to not have made a roux in a cast iron pot is not to have cooked. |

Lodge 7 qt Dutch Oven from Acehardware Outlet |
Instead of driving around looking for a Lodge Dutch Oven, I shopped around the Internet and in particular Americancivilwar. There are so many variants, but I concluded that my dutch oven purchase required a spiral handle bail over the basic models. Based upon price and availability, I settled with Ace Hardware outlet. Certainly, the shipping price of nearly $15 was a concern, but it was 18 lbs and there were reports/reviews that some vendors didn't properly package the shipment and thus damage to the cast iron product. AceHardwareOutlet (AHO) kept me informed via e-mails and UPS shipment status. The product arrived well within the estimated time promised and packaged within a larger box (if it had been shipped in the Lodge box, it would have arrived damaged for sure..)
The dutch oven performed as advertised. Lodge Logic is pre-seasoned and a good hot water wash with a stiff brush was all that was neeeded. I used the dutch oven with a Weber Kettle BBQ and the recommended briquets. Since briquets must be added every hour or so, the spiral handle made the transition easy (lift, drop in some hot coals, drop).
