Outstanding Coverage into the mind of the USMC |
Being a student of warfare, I have often strayed away from books or magazines relating to the US Marine Corps; my ignorance stemmed from the belief that they duplicated missions from the Army and the Navy... After picking up my first copy of the Marine Corps Gazette in 1999, I can't imagine how wrong I was.
Aside from being an outstanding publication of the Marine Corps Association (along with Leatherneck), the Gazette, is chock full of useful information, timely reports and in-depth analysis on a variety of topics. One issue might include reports on the front lines of Iraq, historical snippets from the Korean War, and advice for newly retired Marines on not getting fooled on insurance or housing loans. A lot of information is packed into these 64-pages!
The only downside I can point out to the MCG is its transition in the last year or so. When I first picked up an issue, it had an amazing section on Tactical Decision Games, a one-page wargame that gave budding strategists a chance to 'solve' the problem. These TDGs have been taken out in the interest of saving space for more 'relevant' topics - but what can be more relevant to a Marine than strategy, tactics and operations?
If you're a student of warfare and have no interest in the MCG, you've severely limited your education - get a subscription to the Marine Corps Gazette now! |
