A FAST PACED AND LIVELY CIVIL WAR NOVEL.. While armies lock in deadly combat in the East, Kansans and Missourians wage their own heartland war, savaging all without pity. "Massacre at Baxter Springs" chronicles the true-life adventures of Billy Clark, an 18-year-old Wisconsin cavalry trooper who finds himself in the middle of a bloody guerilla war. Clark is quickly caught in the crossfire between William Quantrill's notorious guerillas and James Blunt, an outnumbered Union general who unwittingly leads his cavalry into a deadly ambush. The narrative describing the battle is based on previously unpublished Wisconsin archival material. This fast-paced novel, dramatizes this horrific confrontation, with all its brutality and heroism. |

Civil War buffs - attention! |
|
Massacre at Baxter Springs is a Civil War novel about a little known but obviously well researched episode in the Civil War in Missouri. It tells the tale of Billy Clark vs Quantrill's Raiders. When the two clash at Baxter Springs, the odds are against Billy. It is an intereting book written for easy reading that while it could use the help of a good editor, is an entertaining book and is recommended for those who are particularly interested in Quantrill. It is rich in the background of the times, especially the hard life of a farmer. |

Real people, Real history |
|
Tom Smith has taken a complicated time in American history, and a complicated place--the Kansas/Missouri border, and he has brought them to life poignantly and realistically. He has the artisic eye that served him so well in the movie industry for years, and he creates scenes that draw the reader into the story of a young widower from Wisconsin who finds himself in the midst of a bloody guerilla war. My husband and I write history, so we know the facts, and Tom Smith has done great research but has also brought these characters to life beautifully. It is a touching and dramatic story that the average reader would enjoy whether or not they are history fanatics. I highly recommend it. |
