This was an AWESOME book!
I didn't want to read this book at first because I am bored by history, but I loved it! I do not agree at all with the people who said this book was not well-written. It was a GREAT book. I will probably read it again. Jeff and Leah must overcome a lot to keep their friendship strong during the Civil War. Jeff is a drummer boy for the rebels, along with his father and brother. Leah helps her father, who is a sutler for the Union. If you are normally bored by History, go ahead and read this book. It is GREAT. You will not be bored, I promise!

Excellent book for children
I bought this book for my younger sister, and ended up reading it myself! It is a great book for pre-teens and young teens. It teaches American history in an interesting way and gives the reader a perspective of the Civil War from someone their own age. If you're looking for a gift, this is a great idea for both boys and girls!

Agree with the 7th grader!
I read the first book in the series when I was in seventh grade and started collecting them with the idea they were going to get better. NOT. The main problem with this series is that the reading level is about third or fourth grade (which is why the writing style and sentence structure are choppy--short sentences were used on purpose, etc.) but the characters are thirteen and fourteen when the series STARTS. By the end of the series, and the end of the war, they are seventeen and eighteen--and the reading level is STILL fourth grade. If the ages of the characters matched the reading level, this would be a good series. But they so strikingly do NOT that I can't see anyone older than twelve being able to enjoy the series. (Sorry, Mr. Morris!)

Interesting Plot, Not Well Written
The book had an interesting plot about the civil war, and what people went through, but you'd have to be younger than 10 not to realize that the editors did a horrible job with this book. The line "I pray that God..." is used way too many times for one book, not because it is a religious reference, it is just used too much. The christian theme is heavily used throughout the whole book, but it plays a small part in the climax. And besides those problems, the sentences are not constructed well, leaving the reader wondering why that was said, usually because it was so obvious. But if you are obsessed with the civil war, this is a different twist on it. Otherwise, save your money.

GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!
You get to know two families during the Civil War. It focuses on the two teens Jeff and Leah who go through strugles with their friendship as Jeff's family joins the confederacy. It takes you back in time during the 1600's. For those who think Civil War books are boring, you haven't read this book!!!!!!!
