Great value in a low priced unit |
I am not an audiophile, thus my evaluation of the Yamaha YST-SW216 is obviously based on criteria different from those an aficionado would use.
My measurement standards are simple: 1) does it produce a lot of bass, and 2) if I turn the volume to maximum, will the neighbors complain?
In answer to the latter question, you bet. If I crank the volume past about 1/8th of its range, the downstairs neighbors and those sharing a common wall with my unit can hear it loud and clear.
In terms of producing a solid bass, yes. The YST-SW216 is an excellent complement to my television's speakers.
The unit is basically a cube, a very heavy cube. Yamaha recommends putting the unit in s corner, facing the room at a 45 degree angle. Works well in my somewhat oddly dimensioned living/dining room.
Hook up is by RCA phono plug or wires. There is a crossover switch, a volume control and and a power switch.
The unit doesn't have ank kind of automatic shutoff or gate, so if the scene or program switches to one where lots of bass may be inappropriate, you may need to get up and turn the volume down or turn it off.
As I mentioned, I am not an audiophile, but I am definitely pleased and impressed with the amount and volume of bass this unit produces. Great value for the price.

Excellent! Very pleased with this thumper! |
I am not an audiophile as one other reviewer mentioned, but I was very happy with what I would call thundering bass in my 23' x 24' room with 9' cielings. I have the volume on about 1/3 level. This thing blows my old 8" Infiniti sub away.
I'm very pleased...and all at a great price. Don't hesitate at all if you are shopping for a sub under $150. That was my price point and I couldn't be happier.

Powerhouse Value! |
This is one of the better bargains for subwoofers. I specifically have this for my "Mitsubishi LT-46149 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Integrated Sound Projector". The `front-firing' simply means it pushes the bass out from the speaker instead of down. The advantage to this is it won't vibrate the floor as much. The sound is unaffected. It perfectly captures the sound of the bass guitar and drums with amazing clarity, but can be overwhelming when listening to a newscaster's voice. My room is only about 20 X 20 feet and I need to keep it turned lower; it's that powerful. There is some adjustment needed if you are using it for your TV and sound system. There are also separate speaker wire outputs on the back for surround systems, but I have found them unnecessary. Denon also makes a great subwoofer, but is somewhat more costly (its worth it).

Great as a standalone subwoofer, but not with sound bar... |
I bought this subwoofer to go with my Yamaha YSP-800 sound bar. Since I've added this subwoofer, the sound is so much better when watching SF or action movies with booming bass sound. The bass that this unit produces is very deep and it can be very loud, shaking the whole floor. It does provide a movie-theater-like experience in your home.
The only problem is when I am watching regular TV shows (like news or commercials) that I don't necessarily want booming base, I'd have to walk over to the subwoofer to turn it off, or lower the volume, or navigate YSP-800's complicated menu to disable subwoofer output. There is more expensive YST-FSW100 which will enable the subwoofer to be controlled by the YSP-800 (or any other Yamaha's sound bar models) and I do regret purchasing this unit because of that... So anyone looking to buy this subwoofer with a Yamaha system should expect this subwoofer to provide the same level of convenience as any other manufacturer's standalone subwoofer. Otherwise, though, this subwoofer definitely give you the quality bass sound, and for this price range, it is one of the best you can get. |

Not Bad but... |
...for just a little more money you can get a subwoofer with more features. I am using the subwoofer with a Mitsubishi LT-46149 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Integrated Sound Projector. The sub has a good tight sound once you find the right volume, and really compliments the TV's 16 speaker 5.1 sound bar. The only controls you have however are an on/off switch, a volume knob and a high/low switch that I think changes the switch over frequency. It does have an rca input plus speaker wire inputs which is nice so you can easily integrate it with a TV like mine or a traditional Home Theater Receiver. The finish is nice and looks classy and the unit is heavy, due to the magnet in the speaker and its well built. It comes with a pad of rubber stickers to put on the bottom that kind of struck me as cheap yet functional.
What I got instead was the Onkyo SKW 204 - Subwoofer that has higher watts, and not only a volume knob but also a knob to adjust the crossover frequency between 25-200 where the subwoofer kicks in. And it also has a standby mode it goes into when not getting a signal. The Onkyo is also more powerful and has legs attached. The only thing the Onkyo does not have are the speaker wire inputs. |
