Because the CDPCX455 plays MP3s as well as CDs, you can expand the already-massive capacity of the player, and literally play the CDPCX455 for days on end. The CDPCX455 can play audio CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs, as well as CDs with MP3 files. You can program the CDPCX455 to play CDs or tracks one by one, in random order, or in your own customized order. A history search allows you to return to CDs that you have recently played, and you can browse through all of your CDs by name, so you'll never lose track of what CDs are in the player or what order they are in. You can also custom-label CDs stored in the CDPCX455 for quicker retrieval. The CDPCX455 includes a jog dial control that gives you quick access to individual CDs or tracks. With the jog dial, you can listen to snippets of music or skip tracks you don't like quickly. For power users or music lovers with a deep library of CDs, the CDPCX455 can synch up with another CD changer. You'll never have to wait for a disc to change to keep the music playing, thanks to a cross-fade feature that brings the audio of one CD down at the same time that a new disc starts to play. By adding a second changer, you can expand your access up to 800 CDs total, and both changers can be controlled by a single remote. The hybrid pulse digital-to-audio converter reproduces a warm, natural sound from your CDs, making you feel like you were there when the music was recorded. I have 2 more 400 disc cd players already, and I just added another to increase my collection. For the price you can't go wrong with SONY. I haven't had any problems with mine. Will buy another if still available when this one fills up. |

Product should be removed from the market |

My husband and I bought this CD changer two years ago and it has scratched about 100 of our 400 CDs. When we called Sony customer service, they told us that they were not aware of the problem. After spending $400+ on a changer that we can no longer use (or return), we have removed all CDs that are usable and purchased a new CD/DVD player. We are now in the process of replacing all of our damaged CDs. I would not recommend this product to anyone and I was very disappointed with Sony's customer service regarding the product. |

Buy an MP3 player. |
Aside from storing your CDs, an MP3 player offers all of the same features as this beast of a machine at a similar cost, but they are portable and more user friendly.
The review "Not For Audiophiles" written by 'antropy' really covered the bases, but I wouldn't rate it with one star. I bought this unit eight years ago, and I've never had any problems with it... with todays technology, I find it unneccessary, or nearly obsolete, but I still use mine, and I like it. |

What a great machine! |
I bought this item with some degree of trepidation after reading some of the reviews. However, the price I found via the Americancivilwar Warehouse Deals website presented me with an offer I couldn't refuse. The unit was listed as refurbished and was less than half the price of a new unit.
I received it within two days and it looked new to me, except for a slightly tattered box. Because of the reviews, I was so worried about whether or not it might damage my CDs, I made copies of the ones I cherish the most and put those in "just in case." I have loaded about 110 CDs into it (I can't really see the day when I will fill it up) and have run it fairly solidly for several days. It works like a charm; great sound and it has not harmed my CDs at all. Like others have mentioned, I also put together an Excel spreadsheet to track which CDs are in each slot as I inserted them and I categorized them by type (jazz, rock, pop, etc.) My next step will be to enter these categories as the artist names so that I can have it randomly select those tracks to stay within the same music "mood" (the manual actually offers this approach as a suggestion for randomly playing music).
It does not really bother me, as some have complained, that I cannot also have it randomly select tracks from the same artist as well; if I want that I'll just keep playing those particular discs myself, no big deal. I have also put together quite a few of my own music compilations onto discs and I like the fact that if I want to throw in a few MP3 formats, it can handle those as well.
I find it interesting that some have complained about these type of machines only lasting five years. If I can get three years out of it I will feel I (easily) got my money's worth. The sound is excellent and I also have no issue with the disc changing time. Although it is fairly large (hey, it holds 400 CDs!), it has a really nice appearance with a soft blue light that is lit in the background when it is on. It does tend to get you play CDs more than you normally might simply because they are so much handier.
Anyway, for me, so far so good. I am not really a Sony fan due to their proprietary marketing strategies (e.g. Memory Stick and Blue-Ray)which I think are bad for the consumer, but I have to give them credit for this one....I couldn't be happier with it. If things change in regard to its performance or quality, I will update this review. I am not sure if I would be quite as thrilled if I had paid the full price, but as for the Warehouse Deals deal I couldn't be more satisfied with my purchase. |
