Excellent, no complaints. Does exactly what it claims to do. Much much better than Panasonic counterpart. Can record digital TV channels to VHS tapes. |

Sony Combo DVD VCR |
|
We actually ordered this device not just to copy old VHS tapes to DVD but to actually copy DVDs to VHS tape. I make DVDs of vacations and family gatherings. The older members of the family do not have DVD players so I wanted to make VHS copies of these DVDs. The device works great and we are very happy with the selection and price performance. |

SONY STILL MAKES THE BEST! |
|
Without a doubt, this is one of the best DVD/VCR recorders I have come across. I have had absolutely no problems with it, both recording and playback. I received it from the shipper as scheduled, on time, and in perfect condition. Easily set up, the unit worked as depicted in the instruction booklet. Another SONY great! |

Sony RDR-VXD655 DVD/VHS combo recorder |
I purchased the Sony RDR-VXD655 VHS/DVD recorder combo. I am very pleased with it in general, but I wasn't too happy with the discovery that 4:3, the soon-to-be-obsolete standard screen ratio for DVD and VHS videos, videos images are a bit squished on my high-definition television. There are no settings to correct the screen aspect ratio. The Sony wants to fill a 16:9 ratio screen, no matter the format. I don't expect any other manufacturer's HDMI DVD players correct for aspect ratio, so hook up your old 480i DVD and/or VHS player to any extra inputs at the back of your TVs if you want to see an unsquished picture. Wide screen movies, however, look great.
The RDR-VXD655 records digital over-the-air broadcasts on VHS; however, don't expect the VHS recording, pre-recorded movies or your own recordings, to look as good as DVD. I still haven't tried recording anything in DVD yet.
A cool feature of the Sony is it ability to play 5.1 channel sound when it is hooked up to a receiver. I have a 7.1 channel receiver, and broadcast shows sound great in surround sound.
I haven't had any problems that other reviewers talked about. I get good over-the-air reception with a Terk amplified table-top antenna which has loops instead of rabbit ears. While I haven't tried all the features on the Sony, everything that I have used worked great. |
