We've been big fans of Magellan's Maestro line since it came out in early 2006. The Maestro interface is incredibly easy to use, even for those who are not completely comfortable with electronics. At the same time, Magellan was ahead of the industry with useful innovations like multi-destination routing and pre-loaded reviews for points of interest like hotels and restaurants (from AAA). With it's 3200 and 4200 series, Magellan has improved the Maestro line giving them a SirfStar III chipset that provides super-fast. satellite lock and making them thinner. In fact, at .7 inches, these are -- at the time of this writing (November 2007), the thinnest portable GPS navigators available. Distingushing between models is also fairly easy.
3200 and 4200 Family of Navigators
Distingushing between models is also fairly easy. The 3200-series navigators feature a 3.5-inch screen, while the 4200s have a 4.3-inch widescreen display. The 3200 and 4200 offer great, basic navigation with turn-by-turn spoken directions, pre-loade maps of the 48 contiguous United States, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, and 1.3 million POIs. The 3210 and 4210, add maps for Canada and Alaska, AAA travel information (see details below) and bump you up to 6 million POIs. The 3220 and 4220 add maps of Mexico. The top-of-the-line 3250 and 4250 add a host of other features, including text-to-speech directions that give real street names, bluetooth for hands-free phone calls, integrated traffic (with a free 3-month subscription), and voice command.

This is my first experience with a GPS and I think this one is fabulous. The voice feature is really nice, its great to cue up info hands free. So far the device has been very accurate and I am very pleased. |

I am sorry I did not get this from amazon because I wanted the extra warranty. It is a very good gps. I love the way it talk's to you "left turn, right turn, turn 2 miles ahead, stay on the left etc.and ring a bell at the turn" .no problem getting it updated,not that I think it needed updating, they let me update it for free so i updated it.I wanted a case, a/c charger, a computer hookup*note the cable is short. |

NO Mac support from Magellan! |
Inconceivable but true! An obscure spot in Magellan's website states they do NOT offer support for "Mac or Apple products" (as of Sept 1, 2008). I found this information -- after much searching -- by going to "Ask Maggie" within their Support section. Type in the word "Mac" and nothing else to see whether this unbelievable void has been filled or not.
At the very least, they should clearly state this limitation in the product specifications for Magellan Maestro 4250 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator |

The Maestro 4250 ROCKS! |
OK...I will admit I am not someone with extensive GPS experience...but it was that limited experience with the original Hertz NEVERLOST in rental cars that kept me in the house of Magellan. I guess one might say I stayed within my comfort zone. This unit does everything I need and then some! I don't have a single complaint with any of the features I have used so far, and I can say I probably have just scratched the surface of its capabilities.
I did read some of the negative remarks here before I purchased. When it arrived, I immediately updated the firmware to the latest version and took advantage of the free NAVTEQ subscription. I also extended the warranty for a year by registering my AAA membership with Magellan. To date I have experienced ZERO anomalies with the unit. Everything works just fine. I will admit it's voice recognition for verbal commands is a little clunky, requiring repeating at different volumes or speeds of speach. It would be cool if we could program the thing to our own voices like cell phones...maybe some day.
I'll say one more thing...if AMAZON steers you towards 6AVE you wont find a lower price anywhere...at least I haven't yet. And it arrived promptly via DHL.

Excellent product with very accurate GPS mapping. The voice to text is clear and useful, and the display is very good compared to products within the price range. The only issue I have currently is the outdated POI database and the occasional stutter in calculation and display. |
