Katherine Heigl is delightful as Jane, a self-effacing Gal Friday so addicted to organizing weddings in her off time, that 27 Dresses opens with her character juggling two nuptials on the same night. A perpetual bridesmaid, Jane’s hobby is discovered by a matrimony reporter named Kevin (James Marsden), who hides a romantic side behind his wall of cynicism. While Kevin gradually develops feelings for Jane, the latter’s superficial sister, Tess (Malin Akerman), pursues George (Edward Burns), Jane’s boss and the object of her love. This romantic circle could go on forever, except that Jane is unexpectedly moved by Kevin despite her general irritation with him and without knowing that he’s on the verge of sandbagging her with a ridiculing article in his newspaper. The situation is absurd, but the emotions are not. Heigl is very good, rooted in a long tradition of comely comediennes playing characters who fly under the radar of life. She makes Jane’s pain palpable and conveys her character’s inability to say no without making her look unappealing or weak. Marsden perfectly captures the part of a rumpled, underdressed writer with repressed passions, Akerman is as convincingly shrewish here as she was in The Heartbreak Kid, and Burns is fine as one of those guys so busy saving the world he barely pays attention to the people in his life. The script by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) is fun if predictable, and Anne Fletcher’s direction is vibrant. --Tom Keogh |

Very good In The Genre |
This is generally a standard romance comedy and is not breaking new ground, but if you saw the previews you knew what to expect, and if you a want to see a good light hearted comedy, you will not be disspointed.
Katherine Heigl is charming in her role in wanting to work around weddings, and of course the scenario is set up where she is always the bridesmaid and never the bride. There are some twists that are a bit different than what you would expect, though you can see some of them coming, but it does not take away from the fun. (And when we watched it, everyone found something a bit suprising at various points, though my one friend semed to catch them all.)
Funny, goofy (in a good way) romantic comedy that is a must if you are into these types of movies. |

Okay, if you want a movie where you have no clue how it's going to end, or a movie tottaly original and unique, this isn't your movie. But, if you love romance and comedy, even if it's not very fresh, this is your movie. I personally loved it. Katherine Heigl is cute, funny, and smart. James Marsden is so hott. They have great chemistry. I would definately recomend buying this one. Great for any movie lovers collection. |

This movie is awesome! Every woman who has dreamed of that perfect love and perfect wedding needs to see this movie! Heigl and Marsden performed wonderfully together. Almost like Burns and Allen or Hudson and Day, awesome chemistry on film. |

Watching "27 Dresses" was like watching an old screwball comedy from the 1940s, but updated for the 21st Century with "adult" situations and language, and the excesses of the modern bridal industry. Although I'm much closer to the bride's mother demographic, than a traditional age bride, I found this movie fun and pleasant to watch, albeit predictable. Even the "surprise" plot twists and misunderstandings were predictable for any adult who has been watching movies more than a year or two. Still the plot twists were more satisfying than if the movie progressed the way the director thought the audience thought it would.
Katherine Heigl was totally believable as the too nice, overly indulgent bridesmaid and perfect doormat assistant to her boss at work. (Although certain plot aspects, such as her running back and forth across town all night to be in two weddings at the same time are not.) You just know that someone this nice is going to crack, particularly when her boss whom she's had a crush on for years is about to marry her spoiled, self-absorbed sister. IMO, this is the part of the movie most worth watching. With great acting from all the actors, good writing, and a parade of amusing bridemaids outfits, I recommend this movie to all who like chick flicks.
I subtracted a star because the movie was so predictable, and was so slow-moving that it occasionally got boring. |
