Editorial Reviews for  'Supernatural - The Complete Second Season'

Product Description
Twenty-two years ago Sam (series star JARED PADALECKI) and Dean (series star JENSEN ACKLES) Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. As a result their father John (recurring guest star JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN - "Grey's Anatomy") raised the brothers to be soldiers. He taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America...and he taught them how to kill it. Sam however wanted nothing to do with this violent and dangerous life and he left it behind until the day Dean appeared on his doorstep with troubling news. Their father had gone missing on a "hunting trip." Sam and Dean have spent the last year cruising the highwaysof the United States in their 1967 Chevy Impala searching for their lost father and encountering creatures that most people believe exist only in folklore superstition and nightmares. Along the way they have battled the various supernatural threats--and each other as well for their sibling rivalries and conflicts were never far from the surface. Finally they found their father just as he was closing in on the Demon who claimed their mother.Running Time: 903 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS UPC: 085391126232 Manufacturer No: 112623

As programs ranging from Kolchak: The Night Stalker to, well, Night Stalker have proven, it's difficult to scare TV audiences on a weekly basis, but Supernatural seems to broken the trend. Not only has its blend of Route 66 and The X-Files provided some of the more chilling TV moments in recent history, but its core story--two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki) battle the forces of evil to avenge their late mother--has been compelling enough to warrant a second season, which is compiled in its entirety on this six-disc set. Season Two maintains the show's "Monster of the Week" approach while adding compelling layers to the main characters and their history; in "What Is And What Should Never Be," a djinn offers the boys a glimpse of how their lives might've played out had their mother not succumbed to demonic forces, while the two-part "All Hell Breaks Loose" brings the season to a close with not only a rift between Sam and Dean, but the gates of Hell swinging open to unleash monstrous spirits. And if that's not enough of a creepshow for you, the boys also encounter a cannibal clown ("Everybody Loves a Clown"), seductive demons ("Crossroad Blues"), a town gripped by mass psychosis ("Croatoan"), as well as a barrage of ghosts, vampires and werewolves. If it's chills you want, the second season of Supernatural has them by the score. There's also a wealth of extras on the Complete Second Season set that should please longtime fans and help newcomers catch up with developments since the show's debut. Informative and entertaining commentaries are featured on three episodes: "In My Time of Dying" (by Ackles and Padalecki), "What Is And What Never Should Be" (by series creator Eric Kripke), and "All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 1" (by Kripke, writer Sera Gambles, and director Robert Singer). There's also a featurette on "All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2" that offers observations by the cast and crew on the season as a whole; viewers should note that the 11-minute short is difficult to find and is accessible only after accessing "The Devil's Road Map," a virtual tour of the places (and monsters) visited throughout the show's history. Padalecki's screen test for the role of Sam is also included, as well as three webisodes about the writers, visual effects and props for the show, and an amusing gag reel. -- Paul Gaita

Excellent TV shows
If you saw the season 1, you must not miss the complete season 2. I finish all six disc in 2 days. I definately will not miss the season 3 in this coming November. I hope you won't miss it too.

Season 1 is great but Season 2 is even BETTER
The extras:
The season 2 box offers more subtititles (English, French, Spanish, Portugese and Chinese) than the first box which only had French, Spanish and Portugese subtitles. You get another hilarious Gag reel which shows Jensen and Jared's funny side. Great commentaris on 3 episodes and a good "Making of" of the season finale. The only improvement I would suggest is more commentaries and more interesting unaired scenes.

The episodes:
From the 22 episodes I love 18 which is pretty good number for a picky person like me. The 2nd season offers more great episodes dealing with a greater variety of topics(love, revenge, family, classic rock,self-sacrifice, time etc.). SPN is certainly no X-files(I'm no Mulder & Scully fan) but a show that tries to tell the story of two brothers on a roadtrip which hunt a few supernatural creatures on their way to a "normal" family life. You can watch episodes like "Tall tales", "hollywood babylon" or "What is and never should be" as stand-alones but I would recommend watching the episodes in the right order, otherwise it could be confusing. It's certainly difficult to understand everything without the knowledge of season 1.

The actors:
Every episode focuses a little bit more on one of the two brothers,so if you enjoy TV-series with many re-occuring actors and a huge character crew, SPN is certainly the wrong show. The recipe of the series is focusing on Dean & Sam Winchester (Jensen Ackles, Jared Padelicki) with the appearances of many great guest stars (Jeffrey Dean Morgan,Jim Beaver, Frederic Lane, Samantha Ferris, Sterlin K. Brown, Chad Lindberg etc).

I own season 1 & 2 but the second is certainly my absolute favorite. Soemthing which sets this show apart from others is the great use of Classick Rock music (CCR, Foreigner, REO, Kansas, Boston, Lynards Skynyrd etc.).

Boring
I am trying so hard to like this show. The actors are good, but the writing is predictable with silly dialogue. The concept is a good one; I just wish there were more momentum and better lines for these poor actors to deliver.

A review for the series as a whole - Seasons 1-3
Before I discuss the show in some depth, I want to state that this tv series' episodes are often more enjoyable the 2nd or 3rd time around - same as other popular paranormal shows - especially the X-Files. Hence having said that, buying the season sets is a must for all who like/love this show.

SUPERNATURAL is a very unique tv series in that it shows two brothers, often in each other faces fighting over the most trivial of things (e.g. Sam's watching with a disgusted face of Dean gargling post toothbrushing and examining the "not squeezed properly" condition of the toothpaste tube), while bonding over surviving another episode of horrors/drama often with life or death situations. The first is common with nearly every sibling relationship and that is refreshing to see in this unique tv series rather than commonly seen in sappy other tv shows.

SEASON ONE was rough in spots due to the interaction of the young actors, but followed by a VERY strong, better acted second season. Yet the storyline really made the show develop in a strong direction. The SECOND SEASON'S strongest appeal often was with the choice songs that complimented the them of various episodes...somewhat dated songs at times (some made me feel real old for I remember the songs when they first came out) but appropriate nonetheless. The true bonding of the brothers really becomes apparent in Season Two. The THIRD SEASON - all actors finally have a well-oiled fit/working relationship that allow the episodes to move in a more realistic fashion. My favorite episode (and it is hard to really pick only one) is the where Dean dies in over a hundred different ways while Sam repeats the same Tuesday over and over again. The episode is funny, emotional with brotherly love, and the determination by Sam to stop the cycle of seeing his brother die day after day. The premise of repeated time has a common appeal for I've seen it in other shows with interesting outcomes (e.g. Star Trek Next Generation, X-Files, and most recently in the relatively new series Eureka - to name a few). In all three seasons, I particularly enjoy the banter between the brothers over the course of a beer or two at the end of the day - definitely more down-to-earth characters than in many other sci-fi/paranormal tv series. Added to this are the wildly unique, often bizarre hotel rooms (e.g. the vibrating bed, the funky 50's style rooms, the ick - I don't want to walk barefoot in that motel room)...and finally the car - definitely a classic for Dean's character even though I have the feeling that Sam loves the car too.

So no fancy hotel rooms, older vehicle, interesting music selections, down-to-earth brothers that enjoy beer in the course of their work as "Hunters" of paranormal activity, and finally the bonding and fighting between brothers add to a very realistic series while covering the appeal of the activities that cannot be explained without believing in the supernatural. Almost every episode is provided with a recap of earlier episodes to help viewers recall particular scenes pertinent to the episode to follow. However, with the DVDs, you have the option of skipping the intro and delving right into the episode. The commentaries are often the best for Jared (Sam) and Jensen (Dean) are naturally funny. A few of the outtakes or gag reel are hilarious and worth watching several times. After watching a few of these, I had to rewatch the episode in which these gags occurred and it really made me enjoy the show more. This brings me to the subject of added extras - it is nice to see these already in the DVD season sets rather than waiting for them with later DVD editions.

As for the show's future - I hope to see more music (season 3 was dismal when compared to season 2's music) and a continuation of the brother bond and rivalry. These make the show. I also hope the show continues longer than the 4 or 5 seasons that have been suggested. I believe this show fits nicely within the cult following of other shows such as: Angel, X-Files, Buffy VS, and maybe a few other paranormal/sci fi shows.

Season Two Got Even Better with Supernatural
If you're a fan of the show, then season two will satisfy and surpass your expectations. If you're unfamiliar with the show, then imagine similar horror/drama series with a twist. This show is absolutely a movie of the week in each episode. But you are ultimately watching a series with a good western feel about a family, and how far they will go to protect each other while trudging through the reason for their existence..helping others. Supernatural season two has all the "creature" comforts you have come to expect from the brothers' travels along with progressively more gut wrenching situations, decisions..and sacrifices for the greater good. Extra features let you peek into what the people who make the show think about the Supernatural universe and how much they put into it's production. You won't be disappointed to own these, because unlike some other shows, you will actually want to watch these again and again, even after a few years.
