Editorial Reviews for  'Carrier'

Product Description
CARRIER is a character driven, edge-of-your-seat, nonfiction drama as well as a total immersion in the high stakes world of a nuclear aircraft carrier. CARRIER follows a core group of film participants aboard the USS Nimitz, from the admiral of the strike group to the fighter pilots to the youngest sailors, as they navigate personal conflicts around their jobs, families, faith, patriotism, love, the rites of passage and the war on terror.

Deserves an Emmy
I just finished watching "Carrier" on PBS and was extremely impressed by the honest, warts-and-all portrayal of life aboard a carrier. The producers did an outstanding job providing compelling human-interest storylines and showing the diversity of attitudes among the sailors, airmen, and Marines regarding their military service. The show captures the real ambivalence some have regarding our strategy on "the war on terror" and yet how they continue to serve professionally in fulfilling their duties. What I most took away from the series was the exceptional sacrifices these military members make by serving long (monotonous) tours away from their families and from the remedial comforts of home that most of us take for granted. "Carrier" puts a human face to the Navy and its personnel whose service is often performed out of sight of the American public. Kudos to PBS for airing this; to the show's producers for their painstaking work in piecing these individuals' stories together in such an informative and engaging series; and mostly to the service members and their families who made the show possible.

Loved the show!
I had alot of fun being in the show; It's been nearly three years now, so glad this has seen the light of day. Maro Chermayeff, Jeff Dupre, Matthew Akers are great!! -

Pre-Reviews by Non-Owners Ridiculous
This column was suppose to review actual products owned by actual customers. But the previous "reviews" are based on the PBS channel broadcast version. I saw the same broadcast. Yes, the story is presented well and the high definition is very nice. But, these observations are not of the DVD product which Americancivilwar is selling. How many reviewers own this product? That's right...zero. But we got lots of bloggers.

I recommend you skip the reviews (deserve a "not helpful" rating) until you get someone who actually owns the DVD version offered and rate them accordingly.

To those who MUST see their review in print based on some format other than what is for sale (or what was an older format), your comments are confusing, which is what Americancivilwar's reviewing format used to resolve! The story may be 5 stars but if the video quality is abysmal, I wouldn't think of spending $20+ to be disappointed from a heavily cut up editing job or a blurry video transfer. If you think you are going to get the same excellent video detail/audio experience that you saw on the PBS broadcast in Hi-def then you'd better look for reviews that comment on how the DVD version turns out because PBS is not offering the Blu Ray/hi def version you saw in digital. Look, if the DVD version that comes out is really terrific and you're ecstatic about it, I'd love to read a great review from you. If it's not so good, I'll also look forward to reading yours. If the story was great, by all means, provide that information with the footnote that you based it only on the broadcast version.

Please find another venue to offer your "blog", or at least qualify your review saying you have not seen the actual product, so that potential purchasers can make a decision based on, drum roll please, actual experience from the product owned or rented. Yes, PBS has a very good reputation for their products but I don't buy products with my eyes closed or from the marketing descriptions, no matter who produces it.

Yes, I know I've used this forum to do exactly what I disdain with other reviews but desire to have reviewers return to the business of reviewing the product and getting away from apple and oranges opinions.

4 stars for the story and 0 stars for a review on the actual product (subject to revision when the DVD is released).

Brings back the memories
Wow. I have to say that the first 3 episodes really brought back the memories. My first ship I was stationed on fresh out of boot was the USS America (CV66). It was in dry dock in Norfolk. It had just come back from a Westpac to Vietnam. In thirty plus years, nothing has changed, with exception of women on board warships now days. At sea, it was a 24/7 operation. On a Med cruise, once the carrier left the pier in Norfolk, you never tied up at a pier again until you returned to the states. Always anchored out, and the always enjoyable boat ride to the dock. The constant cleaning, the enjoyable 3 months spent `mess cooking', and like they pointed out in the show, the ship was like a huge high school. You had it all, from the jocks to the geeks and everything in between. My personal favorite was the every three day refueling/resupply evolutions. Just like clockwork, and for some strange reason, we did it around midnight every time. Top Gun was Hollywood, this is the real deal.

So far so good!
I came to this page to buy this item after seeing just 2 of the 10 episodes on PBS. I love it so far- you can really try to put yourself in their place, and it is interesting to see how the discipline of the Navy influences each person.
