Thanks to Dana Brown's delightful Step Into Liquid, the surfing scene in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, should get a healthy boost. That's because Brown, in the tradition of his father, filmmaker Bruce Brown (The Endless Summer), has captured dazzling images of surfers riding curls in some of the world's most exotic--and sometimes unlikely--places. Besides the action on Lake Michigan, Brown leads us to Costa Rica, where the sport's senior elite (including Summer star Robert August) prove they still have the moves, and Oahu's North Shore, where the legendary Pipeline inspires this quote: "It's so scary, maybe you die a little." Most entertaining is a segment in County Donegal, where the American Malloy brothers startle the locals and meet their Irish counterparts on the grayest ocean imaginable. Loved it! really captures the spirit of surfing and the surfer. I watched this with my kids who are surfing beginners and they loved it. Some great shots and a nice mix of locales. |

Amazing Footage, great interviews, but the soundtrack sucks |
I love the footage! The photography is amazing, and the famous surfers in the documentary were very disarming and modest. There's a real sense of camaraderie, and no one seemed to have a big head.
My only criticisms are that the music is awful, and it would've been cool to hear the waves crashing instead of the cheesy music in some parts. Overall, it's very enjoyable. Even my sister loved it (and she is not at all interested in surfing! Well, she wasn't before Step Into Liquid!) |

The Best Surfer Is The Guy In The Water Having The Most Fun |
This is only one of three surfing movies I have ever paid to see in a movie theater.
Surfing is more than shredding a wave. How much "more" and how can you describe it? You can't. It comes from within. It's unlikely surfers in unlikely places. The best description is watching the guys on Lake Michigan getting stoked drinking beer and surfing muddy wind chop.
When the surf is flat, watching this DVD is almost as good as being in the water... I said "almost". |
