Exceptionally moving but not the least bit sentimental, Concert for George is a splendid tribute to the late George Harrison, whose contributions to the Beatles were so often hidden in the long shadows of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. A year to the day after Harrison's November 29, 2001 death, Eric Clapton assembled some musicians--people who had played with Harrison and known him intimately, including McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Tom Petty--to perform his music at London's Royal Albert Hall. They take on not just the predictable ("My Sweet Lord" and "Something," beautifully sung by Billy Preston and Sir Paul, respectively), but also lesser-known fare like "Old Brown Shoe" and "Beware of Darkness," all to superbly empathetic effect. But the tune most likely to make you misty-eyed is "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," which brings together three of the five musicians who played on the original recording: Ringo on drums, Clapton replicating his own classic solo, and McCartney playing piano and harmonizing with Clapton's lead vocal. Concert for George enjoyed a brief theatrical release, but even those who caught it on the big screen will delight in this two-disc DVD edition. Disc 1 features the complete concert (sans interview and rehearsal footage, but with a few additional songs and in the original running order), while disc 2 contains the theatrical version and some additional backstage and photo material. All in all, a beautiful piece of work. Wish you were here, George--but man, what a way to be missed. --Sam Graham |

Are you kidding me? Buy it! |

Oh come on, I have bought this for a dozen of my friends and relatives. The beat throbs and the visuals fascinate. Actually it is much better than Harrison's originals. The only thing I regret about this disc is not being at the concert. Come on, buy this sucker and join me in a twice weekly airing. |

For Love of George |

The version that played in the cinemas is nothing compared to the version on the video entitled "George's Band". This is hands down the best concert ever. Who would have thought of all the Beatles that the quiet one, George, could have spawned such a show? With the passing of the years and in the shadows of Lennon/McCartney, It has been easy to forget how many great songs George composed. That is until these great songs are performed with such respect and in such reverence by the likes of Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Ringo Star, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Billy Preston and many others of George's dearest friends. You won't believe what happens when egos are checked at the door and musicians of such caliber get together at the Royal Albert Hall to perform George's music with his son. It is truly remarkable. If you haven't seen "George's Band" on the DVD Concert for George you have missed the best show ever. It might bring a tear to your eye. |

Bone-Chilling and Tear Provoking |
"A Concert For George" is an absolute masterpiece of a tribute to a great artist and great man. It is difficult to find words to express the surpurlatives deserving of this DVD. I'm sure George Harrison was smiling over his friends as they performed his songs, and every time this DVD plays in someone's living room, George is smiling again.
The emotions dramatized by the artists participating in this utterly moving tribute to their beloved friend are electrifying and real. This DVD is hands-down my all time favorite. I had not been a great George Harrison fan until I watched this DVD and obseerved these musicians playing tribute to his brilliant body of work. I now recognize George's contribution to the Beatles music and the music world in general. I couldn't help but wonder if the power duo of McCartney-Lennon hadn't held him back, and what other amazing contributions he could have made to the Beatle's library had he been given the chance.
For example, I didn't know until watching this DVD that it was George who authored my favorite Beatles songs: "Here Comes the Sun," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," "Isn't It A Pity," and "Beware Of Darkness." When Eric Clapton sings "Beware of Darkness," only a cretin could watch this stirring performance and not be moved to tears. Billy Preston, singing his spine-tingling rendition of "Isn't It A Pity" is particularly poignant, as Billy also is no longer with us.
For a touching, spiritual experience, not to mention an opportunity to hear some of our finest musicians at their musical and spiritual height as they pay tribute to their beloved friend George, please check out this DVD. Read the details on Americancivilwar regarding the many other exceptional artists participating in this project, (put together by George's dear friend, Eric) and the fabulous Harrison songs they cover. You'll not regret it. RIP, George. |
