Rambo meets Alien in this terrific science-fiction thriller from 1987, directed by John McTiernan just a year before Die Hard made him Hollywood's most sought-after director of action-packed blockbusters. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of U.S. Army commandos to a remote region of South American jungle, where they've been assigned to search for South American officials who've been kidnapped by terrorists. Instead they find a bunch of skinned corpses hanging from the trees and realize that they're now facing a mysterious and much deadlier threat. As the squad is picked off one by one, Arnold finds himself pitted against a hideous alien creature that's heavily armed and wearing a spacesuit enabling the creature to render itself invisible. The title says it all in describing the relentless, escalating action that follows, maintained by McTiernan with an abundance of visual flair. The film's special effects are still impressive, and stunning locations in the Mexican jungles create a combined atmosphere of verdant beauty and imminent danger. The plot doesn't hold up to much scrutiny, but the movie's so exciting and tightly paced that its weaknesses seem irrelevant. --Jeff Shannon |

TERRIFIC SCHWARZENEGGER / HO HUM BLU RAY |
Tension abounds as Arnie and his crew of crack mercenaries (including Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura & Bill Duke-all excellent)thrash through the South American Jungle on a covert mission unawares they're being stalked by a deadly alien hunter. The Californian Gov's in fine form, fragging bad guys and sending them off with his trademark funny one liners. One of the Arnold's brawny best from the 80's puts most modern action films to shame for sheer high testosterone impact and concept.
This is easily the most ordinary Blu Ray transfer I own. This is because the source negative seems to have huge varitaions in grain and exposure which only a full digital restoration could fix. Ironically the variation actually adds to the impact and realism of the movie. It's still a heck of lot better than any other version so far, but far below the eye popping stuff like '2001' or 'Casino Royale' or "The Searchers"

Not worth the expenditure |
Keep or buy the regular DVD, FOX didn't improve the image, very grainy!
And to think I would see my favorite movie in HD? No way. |

You are one ugly................ |
If you haven't seen Predator one or two you owe yourself a rental.
Arnold rocks in this movie.
And it's always good to see former Governor Ventura, `I AINT' GOT TIME TO BLEED"
One of the better sci fi/ horror movies to come out.
The pacing is excellent.
The acting is grade A.
The fx for it's time was top shelf.
Too bad Alien Vs. Predator 2 destroyed this and the Alien franchise with one blow.
Still, required viewing for action, horror, sci fi fans.
Highly recommended.

Disappointing Blu-ray quality |
|
I have always loved this movie and looked forward to seeing in Blu-ray quality. Both my husband and I were bummed. Some scenes were somewhat clear but the overall results were not worth paying for a so-called Blu-ray quality. |

He had me at "Vhat du ve gotta du?" |
What can I say? I saw it for the first time in a theater when I was 13 years old. I loved this movie so much then, that the following week I was at the same theater to see "The Untouchables", but I left that show to go watch "Predator" again.
The quality of the video is not great, because of the grainy film. Despite that, I believe anyone watching this on a 720P (or higher) HDTV will find this experience reminiscent of the theater experience from the late 1980s. |
