Customer Reviews for  'The Twilight Zone - Collection 5'

The Price is Right
Even though CBS released the "definitive" edition with even better picture and sound quality from the 35mm masters, and with extras, this set isn't bad for the price. In other words, you pay a few dollars more to get more, but if you are more interested in price then grab this box set.

One small note: I definately agree with other reviewers. THE TWILIGHT ZONE: UNLOCKING THE DOOR TO A TELEVISION CLASSIC by Martin Grams is 800 plus pages includes "everything" about the classic series and is a wonderful companion with the DVDs. The book details Serling's writing career on radio, early television and Twilight Zone is well researched and highly detailed. Exclusive interviews with cast and crew and behind-the-scenes trivia will floor you. What you do is watch an episode and then read up on it in the book and you'll discover a wealth of trivia that makes this worthy of appreciation. Both the DVD set and the book is on Americancivilwar.com so check it out (samples are available on Americancivilwar's review page). Do yourself the favor and get both. You'll thank me for it.

four stars. not five
I spent over $800 on the VHS videos from Columbia House two decades ago. I spent less than $140 for the complete DVD set and discovered the value.
Sadly, while the quality and price is superb, the definitive set (also on Americancivilwar) beats the quality and extras and price ten-fold.

However, the retail price keeps lowering over the months making this worthwhile if you don't want to spend the additional $5 bucks and get superior picture and sound quality and bonus extras.

I also suggest you buy "The Twilight Zone: Unlocking the Door to a Television Classic" because the 800 plus page book is a P-E-R-F-E-C-T companion to the DVD box set. Before or after you watch an episode, you can use the book to uncover the in-jokes, bloopers and trivia that make viewing these episodes fun. Regardless of whether you buy this set or the definitive box sets, watching the shows is one thing, knowing the behind-the-scenes stuff is even more fun. Both are available on Americancivilwar.

Revenge of the Hour-Long Episodes
My favorite TV series will always be "The Twilight Zone" and I have finally finished watching all of its' 5 vollume set. I will restate from earlier reviews that "The Twilight Zone" died as a series when it switched to hour-long episodes. There were merely two or three hour-long episodes (and frankly, really only ONE) that maintained my interest anywhere near as much as the 30 minute segments. In the 7 DVDs in this collection (plus two "Treasures and More Treasures) there are 5 with an hour-long episode. The only one worth watching was "On Thursday We Leave for Home". As I watched the longer episodes, I couldn't see where the extra time added impact to the story; it merely dragged it out while diluting the message. Thinking this over, I realized that it was because the original "Twilight Zone" segments were the equivilent of Aesop's Fables. Aesop told a relatively short story with a twist or two and then summerized the message. I suppose people have written books and made feature length movies of his fables and their message but did they add anything to the impact of the original? Not in my book (make that "not in my vignette").

OK OK, "The Twilight Zone" is still "The Twilight Zone" and so even with the knock on longer episodes, I still give this collection 4 stars. The best of the 18 30-minute segments are "Mr. Garrity and the Graves" (sarcastic), "The Gift" (profound), "The Silence" (ironic and starring Franchot Tone), "Will the real Martian Please Stand Up?" (suspenseful), "The Fear" (more irony and suspense), and, perhaps the best of the lot, "The eyes of the Beholder" (an essay on our values). The collection get another knock from me by adding two "Treasures of The Twilight Zone" DVDs (to give it the same number of CDs (8) as the other collections. With the notable exception "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge", the other episodes were not among the very best of TTZ. In fact, two of the episodes were already included in this collection in earlier CDs. Oh well, all good things must come to an end.

You are traveling through another dimension!!!!
These are some of the most beloved classics you can buy. The prices are a little high, but worth it! I watched for these shows to be released on dvd for years & now I own all 5 collections (156 shows). I couldn't be happier. Rod Serling was a master of his time. There are a few gliches but, that is due to the age of the film. These shows are remastered beautfully! If you have never seen the Twilight Zone I suggest you buy these classics. Don't buy them one at a time because that can run into a lot of money. Buy them in sets, (If you want the whole collection that is). I started buying them one at a time until I found out you could get them all & it cost a lot of $$$$$. I'm very happy with my collection & I watch them all the time. They will never get old!!!!!
