Editorial Reviews for  'Clueless (Special Whatever! Edition)'

Americancivilwar.com essential video
Alicia Silverstone won everyone over with her portrayal of a Beverly Hills teen, Cher, whose penchant for helping others with their relationships and self-esteem is a cover for her own loneliness. Director Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High) made a smart, funny variation on Jane Austen's novel Emma, sweetly romantic and gently satirical of 90210 social manners. The cast is unbeatable: Dan Hedaya as Cher's rock-solid dad, Wallace Shawn as a geeky teacher, Paul Rudd as the boy who has always been Cher's surrogate brother--and the true holder of her most secret wishes. --Tom Keogh

this is not a children's movie, although if you were 12 you'd probably like it
When I first saw this movie, I was 12. Of course, at the time I loved the movie. I thought that Alicia Silverstone was such an interesting actress and I liked how the movie included "real life" from a kid's perspective. Keep in mind, at the age of 12 my brain was not fully developed.

I do not know how any adult can sit still long enough to watch the opening credits of this movie. It is absolutely nauseating and ridiculous from beginning to end. Frankly, I am also very offended by the scenes of the kids using and abusing recreational drugs at that party. I don't care if it's just a movie and I don't care if you think I am a prude, drugs are disgusting and should never be glamorized to children. I'm sorry that's just the way I feel.

The only person I enjoyed in this movie was Julie Brown as the gym teacher, Ms. Stoeger. She was a hard pill to swallow but also a very clever supporting character, who I barely recognized.

What this movie does not tell the viewer is that money and status and clothing and material possessions do not make you a better person. As a kid watching this I never knew that and I thought that Cher was such a lucky child to have everything that she did. As an adult, I see how sad and tragic and out-of-control her life really was.

If you want to see a realistic presentation of teen life as it was and is and should be then I recommend getting any of the first 4 seasons of 90210.

BTW, the actress who played Dionne, Stacey Dash is in her 40's! I'm not very surprised because she looked like she was pushing 28 or 29. Talk about being miscast.

Can someone please tell Bravo to stop showing this smack every few days? Is their programming dept. really that un-creative and lazy? Thank goodness for on-demand otherwise I'd never find anything on TV except for this shameless example of degradation.

One of my teen favs...lol
Just purchaseing on DVD, I had on VHS but been phasing all those out obviously. Those are like so 1995....lol

America's love affair with deception.
This disgusting film whitewashes the shallow, depressing reality that is our youth culture, as we watch two underaged sexpot cupids trade on their trashy clothes and jailbait tauntings to do such honorable things as matchmaking ugly people together. This is foul territory into which nary a 1980s film trespassed.

Worse still is the embarrassing subplot of the "keepin it real" So Cal stepbrother -- who spends his afternoons lounging by the pool in a flannel reading Nietzsche. I didn't make that up. Oh yeah, and he's an environmentalist. Or the whitewash of a disgusting LA Lawyer as a cuddly daddybear underneath.... Oh yes, Clueless has it all. It is an unredacted dispatch from California Über Alles. A endless procession of paper-doll cariciatures offering itself as satire but never so witty as it smugly asserts. Vapid propaganda that defends the worst segment of our parochial 'culture.'

Clueless was a boxoffice smash and spawned billions of dollars of spinoffs, many of which are on Disney to this day.

Who doesn't love Clueless?
At first glance, it may look like the typical pointless high school comedy. However, it caught me by surprise. Its utterly original (though technically based off of Emma) and endearing, totally funny and deliciously sweet. Before there was Mean Girls, there was Clueless, the best comedic High School film. It's not crass in any way or obnoxious or cliche. It actually has a heart and a good message. And its a perfect age for anyone really.

Funny movie!
What a funny movie! Definitely a favorite of mine. It's one of those you can watch over and over and still enjoy it. Funny stuff :)
