Delightful! |

Perhaps the reason I'm so impressed by this adaptation is because I had only seen the Wishbone version of Northanger Abbey ;) but then again, this film was extremely well-done and completely engaging. The cast was genuine, and as a reviewer has already mentioned, the chemistry between Tilney and Catherine was thoroughly perceived! Who could help themselves from replaying the garden scene where Catherine shows Tilney the way to the Allens' home? (Though their house can be seen from the Morelands' parlor room window!) |

This retelling of the book hits all the right notes. It is charming, witty and all the actors involved do the right things and look the right way. I am very happy with this movie. I thank all involved in its making. |

I really enjoyed this version of the Austen classic. It was funny and romantic, much as Austen wrote it. The actors made the characters jump right out of the pages of this story. |

A Hard One to Capture |
I agree with all the critiques so far, but the executives at PBS/Masterpiece Classics should be horsewhipped for being so stupid as to think that Austen lovers would be content with 1 1/2 hour productions and convoluted changes. This adaptation is delightful with it's music, costumes, and choice of actors- I think I've fallen in love with J.J. Feild, but at times I also felt like I was on a run-away train. The pace is so fast that I shouldn't be surprised that the last 2 minutes left me shaking my head-that was our hero and heroine walking out of Church with their baby, right?? Who could tell with such a long, awkward shot across the grass. The ending was not well done.
However, the adapters did try to capture the wit, irony, and tone of Austen's characters- not easy to make fun of Gothic novels when one is writing exactly that-a Gothic novel. |
