Description
All her life Englishwoman Gladys Aylward knew that China was the place where she belonged. Not qualified to be sent there as a missionary, Gladys works as a domestic to earn the money to send herself to a poor, remote village. There she eventually lives a full and happy life: running the inn, acting as "foot inspector", advising the local Mandarin and even winning the heart of mixed race Captain Lin Nan. But Gladys discovers her real destiny when the country is invaded by Japan and the Chinese children need her to save their lives. Based on a true story.

Americancivilwar.com essential video
An epic and extraordinary true story--or, at least, an extraordinary story based on a novel (Alan Burgess's The Small Woman) based on a true story. Gladys Aylward (an improbably mesmerizing Ingrid Bergman) is a British would-be missionary with an obsession about China. As she has no experience, the Missionary Society won't let her go, but she goes anyway, alone, to a remote northern province. She is hated, then loved; finally she becomes both a significant political figure and the heroine of a miraculous escape in which she shepherds 100 children to safety across the mountains just ahead of a Japanese invasion. Curt Jurgens is suitably stony as Lin Nan, the half-Dutch, half-Chinese military officer who falls in love with her, and a visibly ailing Robert Donat (who died before this, his final film, was released) is the wily local mandarin who sees and makes use of her extraordinary abilities. Directed by Mark Robson, The Inn of the Sixth Happiness is a sweeping, stirring tearjerker, a big tale told in a big landscape with acres of orchestrated strings by Malcolm Arnold. A beautiful and beautifully made film that's a classic of the "everyone said I couldn't but I did it anyway" genre. --Richard Farr

Great Film
This has been my all time favorite movie since I was 12 years old, many many moons ago. This movie is based on a true life, and whether you have religious beliefs or not, is a great inspiration for anyone who has goals and dreams in life. Determination means so much more than any education (even though in this day and time education is important). This movie also gives the great perspective of how attitude can mean the difference between life and death.

Very Enjoyable and Uplifting Film
In "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness", Ingrid Bergman plays Gladys Alyward, an English lady who decided to become a Christian missionary in China unaware of the struggles that lay ahead. Alyward eventually heads to China via the Trans-Siberian railroad and manages to get out of a potentially serious mix up along the way. Then comes the hard part ranging from adopting orphans to the death of her missionary trainer to attepmts to stop foot binding in the area to encounters with robbers. And then there's trying to stop a prison riot. Then comes the really hard part, surviving a Japanese bombing raid and leading a group of orphans on a dangerous trek to safety through enemy lines. The ultimate result is the story of a lady trying to fulfill the purpose she believes God gave her despite all the obstacles along the way. Overall a good film that is both enjoyable and uplifting. The most seriously flaw is using some western actors to play two of the main Chinese roles. Otherwise, it is well done.

I would also recommend Bergman's film "Joan of Arc" despite some of its historical mistakes.

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness
My wife loves this movie and wanted a DVD copy. The product was received as ordered and she has already watched it twice. The DVD copy was excellent.

Still enjoyable
Still enjoyable. Robert Donat - even with his squeaky voice is brilliant. Ingrid Bergman, as always, is super. Love the quintessential Englishness of the movie.

Follow your Dreams
This movie should be watched by any person who has that nagging feeling there is something she needs to accomplish in her life and she is not sure she can do it. You CAN! And only God knows hoe WONDERFUL an adventure that will be for you!I rated it 5 stars, can't seem to fix the fact only 2 show up. This movie is on my top 5!
