Christopher Guest, the man behind Waiting for Guffman, turns his comic eye on another little world that takes itself a bit too seriously: the world of competitive dog shows. Best in Show follows a clutch of dog owners as they prepare and preen their dogs to win a national competition. They include the yuppie pair (Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock) who fear they've traumatized their Weimaraner by having sex in front of him; a suburban husband and wife (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara) with a terrier and a long history of previous lovers on the wife's part; the Southern owner of a bloodhound (Guest himself) with aspirations as a ventriloquist; and many more. Following the same "mockumentary" format of Spinal Tap and Guffman, Best in Show takes in some of the dog show officials, the manager of a nearby hotel that allows dogs to stay there, and the commentators of the competition (a particularly knockout comic turn by Fred Willard as an oafish announcer). The movie manages to paint an affectionate portrait of its quirky characters without ever losing sight of the ridiculousness of their obsessive world. Almost all of the scenes were created through improvisation. While lacking the overall focus of a written script, Best in Show captures hilarious and absurd aspects of human behavior that could never be written down. The movie's success is a testament to both the talent of the actors and Guest's discerning eye. --Bret Fetzer |

Best in Trilogy |
When I reviewed WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, I mentioned that I had BEST IN SHOW and THIS IS SPINAL TAP on order. And if we want to consider them some sort of trilogy, since they're "mockumentaries" with quite a bit of overlap in their casts... Now that I've seen them all, well, note the title of this review.
Humor is subjective, and it's true that movie one goes "over the top" quite a bit more than WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, as another reviewer noted, it's still my favorite of the three. With GUFFMAN in a close second, I'll add. Maybe I'm just partial to Hubert the bloodhound, or North Carolina.

One of the Best Comedies EVER!!! |
|
I seldom re-watch movies. Once I see a movie, I feel it's a waste of valuable lifetime moments to watch it again. My definition of a 'favorite movie' therefore, is one I like to watch over and over again and love it every time. I am 50 years old and there are only about 3-4 movies that fall into this category for me. Best in Show is definitely one of them. It is one of the most hilarious movies I have ever seen. There are not just a few funny parts, this movie is jam packed with funny lines, ridiculous characters, and preposterous situations. Whether you have a twisted sense of humor (me), or just your everyday normal person sense of humor, you will love this movie. I don't know how to label the type of comedy in this dvd, so I'll just say this; Imagine all your favorite Seinfeld characters at their very best, then multiply it about 20 times. You will laugh all the way through this movie. Love it, love it, love it!!!! |

I laugh every time I watch it! |
My husband actually turned me onto this movie. The first time I saw it, I was completely surprised. But, the second time I was hooked.
These actors are truly amazing. Considering they have done other movies as well, I'm mesmorized at the manner in which they can take on a new persona with each movie.
There is no picking a favorite in this movie when it comes to a person or scene - because the whole thing is just great.
If you don't have a sense of humor that's a little off to the side, then this probably isn't the movie for you. But, if you like things with some interesting twists (which that absolutely has), you'll love it. |
