They call it Giant because everything in this picture is big, from the generous running time (more than 200 minutes) to the sprawling ranch location (a horizon-to-horizon plain with a lonely, modest mansion dropped in the middle) to the high-powered stars. Stocky Rock Hudson stars as the confident, stubborn young ranch baron Bick Benedict, who woos and wins the hand of Southern belle Elizabeth Taylor, a seemingly demure young beauty who proves to be Hudson's match after she settles into the family homestead. For many the film is chiefly remembered for James Dean's final performance, as poor former ranch hand Jett Rink, who strikes oil and transforms himself into a flamboyant millionaire playboy. Director George Stevens won his second Oscar for this ambitious, grandly realized (if sometimes slow moving) epic of the changing socioeconomic (and physical) landscape of modern Texas, based on Edna Ferber's bestselling novel. The talented supporting cast includes Mercedes McCambridge as Bick's frustrated sister, put out by the new "woman of the house"; Chill Wills as the Benedicts' garrulous rancher neighbor; Carroll Baker and Dennis Hopper as the Benedicts' rebellious children; and Earl Holliman and Sal Mineo as dedicated ranch hands. --Sean Axmaker |

I love this movie, it is one of my favorite movies off all times. This is my second copy. |

I don't know where to start with this... |
|
But I'll try. Taylor's character meets Hudson's character; they fall in love, marry, and go off to Texas to tend his ranch. Dean's character is the outcast who works for them who later becomes a millionaire when he strikes oil. The couple have kids, the kids grow up and marry, and Hopper's character marries a Mexican woman. They have a kid, and the wife and kid have many problems in society, along with the rest of the family. There's death, sadness, and everyone ages 25-30 years. It's really a long soap opera, not an epic like it's portrayed to be. It was good most of the time, but some parts were disturbing and uncomfortable to watch. All the characters are acted well, and it's worth seeing at least once. |

the DVD of the movie, "Giant" |
|
I really enjoyed watching once again the movie, "Giant." Equally as well I enjoyed the second disc which was largely comments from cast members and very interesting stories along with interesting shots of various things at the time when the movie was in production. I have right now loaned it to a very good friend; he hasn't returned it yet. He and I saw a comment on TV recently about James Dean, and I mentioned to him that I would loan him my DVD. He may want to keep it. I am not a big DVD person, but this one is about my favorite, among my small collection. JM |
