Remakes are always a gamble, so it's a pleasant surprise that Fun with Dick and Jane pays off with unexpected dividends. It's as entertaining as the 1977 original starring George Segal and Jane Fonda, and the teaming of Jim Carrey and Téa Leoni makes this a safe bet for comedy fans, in spite of a slapstick screenplay that fails to achieve its fullest potential. Rather than attempt a darkly comedic send-up of the Enron scandal that left thousands of stockholders in financial ruin, director Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) opts for a lighter, more accessible (read: commercial) satire of corporate greed and cynicism, beginning in the year 2000 when Dick (Carrey) gets a plum promotion as a mega-corporate communications director just as his boss (Alec Baldwin) is preparing to bail out before stock prices plummet. Dick's wife Jane (Leoni) has quit her job as a travel agent, so the corporate bombshell leaves them penniless and desperate, resorting to petty thievery and, eventually, plotting high-stakes revenge against the greedy executives who ruined their lives. As a send-up of financial distress in a ravaged post-Enron economy, Fun with Dick and Jane delivers laughs with just enough pointed humor to give it a strong satirical edge, and Carrey's reliable brand of zaniness is controlled enough to balance nicely with Leoni's more subtle (and woefully underrated) skills as a screen comedienne. And while the "special thanks" end-credits hint at the sharper, more biting satire this might have been, there’s enough fun with Dick and Jane to make this recycled comedy worth a look. --Jeff Shannon |

Honestly, I didn't think I'd enjoy this movie much. So much of Jim Carrey's stuff for me is hit and miss with my sense of humor. This one pleasantly surprised me with many unexpected funny scenes.
Alec Baldwin always does a great job at portraying someone you want to hate, and does so again as the greedy, corporate top executive who makes it rich at the expense of the average guy.
I didn't like the portrayal of turning to robbery and justifying it in desperate circumstances as being a reasonable and fun option. Their characters were very shallow and vain when in the down and outs, but I guess this movie's intent wasn't to show character in the first place.
I guess overall I'd rate it as so-so. Funny parts but probably not one I'd watch again.

I Had Fun w/ Dick & Jane |

Laughed harder at this movie than most others I've seen. Ran across & watched it for the first time during a mini-marathon rebroadcast on TBS. Contrary to some reviewers I thought that Carrey's comic instincts were right on track & very well-moderated. He even pulled off a few poignant moments as a dramatic actor in the film, conveying both the tragedy & dark comedy around loss of job, prestige & all things attached, as well as the extremes in behavior which that can lead people to. Carrey & Tea Leoni mesh well together as the husband & wife, supporting each other through improbable choices, during an improbable time. Even during the most madcap moments of the film they manage to convey a delightful warmth as partners which is refreshing to see in an onscreen marriage. Their concern for each other during every laugh of the film lends credibility to the incredible. Tea Leoni earns profs here as a comedic actor in her own right. This is a truly entertaining comedy, which to its unlikely credit also arouses some reflection. |

Give Dick and Jane a chance |
A remake of Fun with Dick and Jane
When I talk about this movie, the thing I say is it has "something for everyone". Ladies will enjoy the "love story" and men will love the robberies and deceit (or maybe the other way around with some couples). I am a big Carrey fan; he is slapstick with depth. I have yet to see the original or read the book, but I plan to. This film could have easily been made into a dark comedy, considering the storyline, but Carrey keeps it light and the on screen chemistry is never doubted. I don't think many real-life women who would have hung in there! Give it a chance and I think you will enjoy it no matter what your tastes are. |

Worth Seeing |

This is not a classic and it is not realistic, but it is fun and there are parts that are great. I love Leoni and Carey together. The best is when he loses his job, he tries to turn to stealing as a means to pay for his bills. It it what it is - a great way to spend and hour and 1/2. |
