Probably Def Leppard's best album, and certainly their most successful, Hysteria pretty much sums up 80s hard rock: catchy, tuneful, and fun. It's also one of the few albums from the period that doesn't sound dated now, and singles like "Pour Some Sugar On Me", "Armageddon It", and "Rocket" remain staples of rock radio. The rest of the album is equally entertaining; "Animal" and "Hysteria", while mid-tempo, have the same slick intensity, and "Love Bites" is one of the few pop-metal ballads that doesn't sound saccharine over a decade after its release. Def Leppard may be remembered more for their hair than their music these days, but that's more due to changing tastes than anything else. It's still good. --Genevieve Williams |

Best Def Leppard Album |
|
I think this was one of my first rock tapes, along with Aerosmith's "Permanent Vacation" and Great White's "Once Bitten Twice Shy". I loved this album top to bottom, for all the great songs it has, still today I have most of it on my IPOD and enjoy very much listening to them: Armageddon, Animal, Pour Some Sugar On Me are outstanding rock songs and the whole album is worthwile playing straight up. Catchy choruses, guitar riffs and great melodies for those few who haven't heard this album already, are in this great (for me their best) CD. Must have if you're born in the late 70's!!! |

far from my favorite yet undeniable as a classic |
|
Hysteria isn't my favorite Def Leppard album (I rank Pyromania #1 and High N Dry #2) but it's impossible to deny the impact or popularity the band achieved with this release. There are a ton of great hit songs on here, and no Def Leppard collection should be without Hysteria. My favorite tracks include: Women, Rocket, Pour Some Sugar On Me, Hysteria, Armageddon It, and Love Bites. |

Great Album, but read on BEFORE you buy on vinyl! |
As mentioned below, this is an awesome album- in fact, one of Def Leppard's greatest!
Before you purchase this, however, don't pay attention to the reviews below that list this as coming with a second record with lots of extras. Like me, you'll be getting your hopes up and be disappointed a bit once it arrives. This LP is just that- a single 12" with all the original songs... no previously unreleased material, just the ORIGINAL album ONLY.
I blame this on Americancivilwar, as they should really be careful to separate comments that go with CD versions and vinyl.
Do you really want the best sounding version? Go with this no-frills, vinyl version rather than the CD- I HIGHLY recommend it! |

The Perfect 80's Rock Album |
This was the first album I ever bought back in 1988. I remember having my dad take me to the music store and him not understanding why they misspelled "deaf" and "leopard" in the band's name. Anyway, I wore this tape out and I am still not tired of listening to it. It's a more radio friendly version of Def Leppard as the harsh guitar tones have been replaced with the smooth effects-laden guitar tones of the mid to late 80's. I really believe Phil Collen had a big impact on the sound of this record. The style of guitar playing is very different from their earlier material.
Of course everyone knows the big hits from this album but really all of the songs are great with maybe the exception of "Excitable". There is another amazing epic in "Gods of War", a great rocker in "Run Riot", and one of the best album closers in "Love and Affection". It's a great mix of hard rock and pop that will never be duplicated. |

More of pop rock |
|
Def Leppard's first 3 cds i though were great. Then this cd came out. Just seems more of a pop rock cd. I guess thats cool if you like that kinda stuff, but if you like heavier def leppard go get High N Dry or Pyromania. Both really good records. |
