As a part of Arden's Garden Productions ongoing efforts to wage peace, KPIG (arguably the best commercial music radio station in these United States) is proud to be associated with the release of this compilation CD featuring tracks from 13 artists performing their own peace songs in a variety of roots styles. 100% of the net proceeds associated with this project support Veterans for Peace in their efforts to bring the troops home from Iraq now. Arden's Garden Productions and KPIG believes in the diversity of viewpoints represented here. They fervently hope to spread the message of peace, galvanize folks to action, and keep a steady influx of funds flowing into Veterans for Peace, all while providing the listener with an opportunity to hear some really great music.
Peace hymns and protest songs have recently crept back into fashion in the music world, as fury and sorrow over the Iraq War has bubbled up into the mainstream. Some of the artists on this collection have been at it for a while: Country Joe MacDonald evolved from an iconic '60s anti-war firebrand into a tireless advocate for veteran's rights. Accordingly, here he records a tune called "Support The Troops"; other songs on this low-key set follow a similar path -- rather than fume at George Bush, per se, they extol peace as an abstract good. Some of the songs are quite lovely, some are quite sad... Along with veteran folk singers such as MacDonald, Bob Brozman and Jesse Colin Young, there are also some relatively unknown artists, such as Dennis McGregor, whose reflective "Caught In Your War" opens the album and SF Bay Area local Sherrie Austin chimes in with "I Wouldn't Lie To You." This CD probably won't win over anyone voted for Bush, but for those listeners who are open to the message, it's a nice, thoughtful set. Definitely worth checking out. |
