Customer Reviews for  'Live to Tell'

Even after 6 years!
Even after 6 years its still a summer hit song. David Morales has managed to differentiate the 4 versions enough that we never get bored of it.

Lucrezia - An Undiscovered Talent
In 1986, Madonna released her "True Blue" album. One of the most popular songs on that album was also a song that was featured in her husband Sean Penn's movie "At Close Range". That song was "Live to Tell". In a lot of ways, I felt that song really showed Madonna's growth as a musician. One thing that was outstanding about that song was how Madonna brought raw emotion to that song. It featured haunting synthesizers that were perfect for Madonna's vocals. Despite the use of a drum machine in that song, I still consider it one of Madonna's better songs. A few months ago, I was in a local health club that happens to play music videos. On the video screen came a cover of "Live to Tell" by an Italian singer named Lucrezia. Normally, I am not one for covers of songs. In the case of what I consider a classic song like "Live to Tell", I would think the cover would be no match for the original. As I started to watch the video I was completely wrong. Lucrezia would deliver a very different version of this song and by the end of it, I soon realized how she put her own stamp on the song. Following seeing this video, I went on a search for this version of the song. I discovered this CD maxi-single, "Live to Tell" featuring remixes by David Morales. Overall, while I still would have liked to see a full album, this would still make me happy by being able to have this cover in my collection.

There are actually six tracks on the "Live to Tell" maxi-single CD. In addition to the original version Lucrezia's cover of the song, there are three other remixes by David Morales (A "Radio" version, a "Club" version, and a "Classic" version). There is also a "Dub" that primarily consists of the instrumental tracks remixed for "Live to Tell". Finally, there is one other Lucrezia song entitled "Nothing to Say".

The cover was produced by Roy Malone and recorded in Italy in 2001. There aren't going to be any haunting synthesizers like in Madonna's version. This version is going to have a much quicker tempo with a Euro/Techno feel. Although the cover won't have the haunting feel like Madonna's version, the combination of the Euro/Techno synthesizers with some outstanding vocals by Lucrezia are going to deliver a high level of intensity for this song. Lucrezia is flawless in her delivery of the vocals. Although the CD doesn't contain her video, it is worth mentioning that Lucrezia delivers an outstanding performance in the music video for "Live to Tell". This woman definitely has an outstanding screen presence. From what I've researched on her, she was a Madonna fan as a young girl. In the video, you can get a good sense that Lucrezia had that affection for Madonna. However, I can also listen to the audio track and get that same feel.

The "Radio" remix of Lucrezia's cover of the song is probably the best track. Next to the "Radio" remix, I would also recommend listening to the Original version of the cover by Lucrezia. Of the two other remixes - the "Club" and "Classic", I would definitely recommend the "Club" one. This is an extended 9+ minute version of the song. The Euro/Techno feel for the song makes this song a natural for the Dance Clubs. While I don't spend a lot of time in dance clubs, I'd be very disappointed if this song didn't get a lot of airplay in the clubs. About 4 1/2 minutes into the club remix, you will hear a whispering vocal of "Live to Tell" in the song. The whispering comes back about 6 minutes into the song. This gives the remix a real good feel and puts Lucrezia's own "haunting" spin on the song. The "Classic" remix is pretty good - there is actually more of a disco synthesizer that gives the song a 1970's feel to it. However, I think the strength of this song is that it has a "Euro/Techno" feel - which is a very modern-day dance trend. This song also features the haunting style of the Lucrezia whispering "Live to Tell".

The instrumental "dub" also features some of the whispering "Live to Tell", but this is primarily an instrumental. There are also some additional sound effects in it. The "Dub" is something that also could easily be played in the dance clubs.

"Nothing to Say" is a nice song as well. The thing about this song is that it isn't going to be Lucrezia's vocals that are going to be the highlight of this song - this is going to be the rhythm that will be featured. I didn't like the introduction to this song - too "mix-ey" for me. However as rhythm continues with this song, you will soon hear what I term a "Classic European" sound. This sound is what is going to make this song really hook you.

I do think that this CD maxi-single does showcase a real vocal talent in Lucrezia. If I am a record company executive, I try to sign her up in a hurry. This woman has not only the look, but the voice to be a major music star - and not just in the dance clubs. As for this CD maxi-single, if you have heard this cover of "Live to Tell", this is going to be the CD to get. If you are a dance club fan, this should please you. Most importantly, Madonna fans should be satisified too. This cover is going to have a feel similar to Madonna's "Confessions on a Dance Floor" album. Highly recommended.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!!!!
I took a risk buying this cd because i never heard of it but i noticed it was on the club charts for a long time and i thought that the title "live to tell" might be a remake of the classic madonna song. so when i got it i listened to it continously. The song is a club song and a remake of the madonna song "live to tell". The single has the radio mix and three david morales remixes. I'm not a big fan of david morales that much now but he outdone himself on the remixes. The remixes are radio edit, club mix, and his classic mix which are all really good remixes. The cd also has the song "Nothing to say" which is another club mix that is just ok. I also could not find this cd in any of the music stores where I lived. They haven't even heard of her but she sounds like somebody that will make it big in the future.

Lucretia - Live to Tell (morales mix) logix
Brilliant video and song played on MTV dance channel in the UK pre christmas 2001. But it is driving me mad trying to get track the CD single in england. Not sure it was ever released outside the US.

Lucrezia..? Where did she come from?
I heard this track while watching videos on HBO Zone and I had to have a copy. This remake of the original "Live To Tell" captures even more of the essence of the lyrics. The bass beat has a jazz effect which enriches the essence of time, and life, passing by. If you know the feeling of wanting and needing to do something but not being sure when, then this track by Lucrezia is definitely for you.
