Better than Motorguide by far |
I had a Motorguide Great White 36v 60" shaft. The SS shaft bent on the first use. Then it kept bending. It bent so bad it wouldn't sit on the mount when retracted (because the 36v motor was so big) and often slid off when trailering. It wouldn't fall off the boat but would fall off the mount. Then the prop shaft bent! And from the shear torque of the motor! I never hit anything. I had all this replaced under warranty but the 60" shaft bent again soon after (I knew it would). The thing was so poorly designed, why was the prop shaft as big as a pencil yet the motor had the power of a 7hp outboard? The adjustment mech for stress relief when you run aground was a joke. Always tightening those knobs, what a pain. I couldn't keep up with three wet cell batteries and a tournament charger that likes to "gas" the batteries (this was before Odyssey/AGM batteries were out). I sold that lousy trolling motor and vowed never to buy another one. I figured my boat was just too big (20' bay boat with high gunnels) and that was most of the problem... wrong.
I decided to try this Minn Kota, I wanted the simplicity of the tiller, no remotes, foot peddles etc. Just like the Great White I had. I also decided to stay with just 24v this time to ease the battery situation.
What a great choice! Plenty power! Very little diff from the 36v Great White power wise, and no bending shafts! I bought two BIG Odyssey AGMs and a smart onboard charger. I now enjoy using the trolling motor and no battery/charging maintenance. The mount on the Minn Kota is much better designed for impact using a big spring. It's a little bulkier than the GreatWhite and doesn't fold down as flat as a result but at least it works and it hasn't bent the propshaft under it's own power yet. What a joke that Great White was. I highly recommend this MinnKota Riptide Pro.
