Fantastic motor, quiet, powerful and convenient. |
Got this motor for a light 12' jonboat as the only motor. Three years using it, perhaps 40 fishing trips. It seems a bit heavy, but its not as it reflects how strong it pushes and the lower motor case is metal to stand against rocks.
Three people on the jonboat with a group 27 marine battery (reserve capacity 185 amps, a little bigger than the usual group 24) have traveled around 9 kilometers with it only, having aprox 10% of the energy left.
As it has no speed presets, you can vary it as little or as fast you want to go. The built in battery meter is very USEFUL.
The propeller its bigger than the 40lb units, so this 55lb moves the boat with decision, even under heavy wind. For this light jonboat or a bigger boat, its better to get this 55lb instead a 40lb. You'll appreciate the added thrust every moment.
It is energy efficient, and performs admirably. If you're planning to buy a 40lb, buy this one instead. It costs a little more, but its worth the added thrust for a unit made to last decades if taken well care of it.
Its the most powerful motor available for one 12v battery. It can be used either in a 12' jonboat or a 16' deep-V. Either one, its a great, powerful, quiet unit.

Does what is claims and does it well. It is heavy, though, for small boats; but that's what comes of needing 55lbs of thrust, I suppose. |

minn kota 55 lb - works great |
Used it on a 14 foot porta-bote with me and 3 kids (8, 13, 17). Motored for over an hour on the first run (at pretty much full throttle), pushing the 4 of us around the lake. Beats the heck out of rowing. My battery is about a year and a half old and hasn't been maintained that well (just disconnected from my travel trailer until next use). Bought a minn kota battery charger to maintain the battery in the future. Would like to see how long we can go on a new, well-maintained battery.
The motor seems to be good quality and solid. |
