This played DVDs I couldn't previously play on my PC |
This is definitely the best video player for PC I have seen.
I have a few special DVDs that I couldn't watch on my PC because of the "missing remote".
Fortunately this product understood what I wanted to do when I hit the arrow keys on my keyboard. I tapped the arrow keys to enter a "hidden" track on a DVD that my buddies made of a bachelor night out... the DVD is all casual fun, hangin' out at bars and playing pool, etc... etc... ... but the hidden track has all the hot ladies (some not so hot) my buddies hung out with for the night... Just fun... but the only way this works is with a DVD remote control...
Win DVD 9 pulled it off in fine form...
Additionally I found the DVD upscaling to be excellent (as excellent as upscaling can be.
The picture quality usually gets really fuzzy with other upscaling features I've used on my stand alone blue-ray player... but this is done well not too fuzzy, even on REALLY low resolution videos.
I admit this is a bit pricey for what you get... But in the end... a good quality DVD/Blue Ray player is useful...
I'm not sure how others have had such a bad time with this... My experience with it has been peachy.
They even had enough foresight to let you know on a warning paper in the box what versions of the Real Player and Quicktime were being installed so you wouldn't accidently try to install them again if you have newer version...
I think this software and the forward thinking of its creators, who anticipated my needs very well, are both very solid...
I didn't give it 5 stars because it seems to demand a pretty fast system for Blue Ray (I think that is a blue-ray thing not a WinDVD 9 thing) performance to be peak, and it is a bit pricey...
but I would get it again.. |

Crashed Vista SP1 and I had to reinstall XP to reclaim reliable DVD playback. |
After installing this product on Vista Business with Service Pack 1 and rebooting -the whole OS crashed after the BluRay DVD version of I Am Legend autoran.
After performing a system repair and trying to replay it, DVD9 did it again !
Had to uninstall it to get it stop crashing.
On an XP ServicePack 2 system, the product just kept crashing with a "sysfader" error no matter what kind of DVD BluRay or otherwise I tried to play and the system wouldn't play any DVD's after uninstalling it.
Even a SystemRestore to an earlier checkpoint wouldn't restore DVD play functionality and the File Protection error window appeared every time I tried to do so with dvdplay.exe.
Had to finally just perform a repair reinstallation of XP and reinstall the 100+ patches that have been released since XP SP2 just to get DVD's playing reliably again. |

Excellent player with hardware acceleration support |

I'm building a HTPC and this program is just fantastic. As a basic DVD player it does a great job, but no better than everything else out there, such as PowerDVD. The interface is great, and it supports basically all the latest Dolby standards. Where this shines is Blueray playback. It supports the latest hardware acceleration for all the major chipsets. This greatly improves Blueray playback quality by reducing CPU cycles. If you build HTPCs for blueray playback, have a serious look at this program. |

Disappointing |
While this version supposedly supports Blu-ray and HD-DVD, unfortunately it's poor support of HDCP requirements/hardware resulted in content protection warnings on all disks tried. This was installed on a PC that already successfully uses PowerDVD V7.3 for both disk formats. So while I had hopes that the new WinDVD 9 would be a suitable alternative for Cyberlink's decision to drop HD-DVD support from PowerDVD 8, this current version does not appear to be the answer.
Beyond the obvious failure to play high definition content, the overall user experience was below standard. The installer/uninstaller was slow and clunky, spending a considerable amount of time apparently doing nothing before finally installing the application. More importantly, the user interface and available menu options were far inferior to those of PowerDVD. For the price, I would expect at least equivalent capbilities, but there was no evidence of the features and control options I want from my DVD playback software.
There did not appear to be an update available for the software, although it was unclear if the automatic update feature was even working. |

Nothing too spectacular, but does it job nicely. |
WinDVD 9 is Corel's latest version of their DVD software with Blue Ray technology. Unless your computer is store bought and and/or preinstalled with DVD decoder software you will be unable to play DVD movies on your PC. In my case I built one of my PC's so this computer did not have the ability to play DVD movies even though I had a DVD drive. It really wasn't that big of a deal because my laptop came preinstalled with a decoder and of course I have a standalone DVD player for all of my TV's. Since I don't have a blue ray player for my PC, I would have certainly passed on WindDVD9 had I had to pay for it, but since I didn't, I figured I would pick it up to see how well it does with regular DVD movies.
Overall WinDVD 9 does what it's supposed to do, play movies; and it does it well with no problem. Some neat features of this application are as follows, ALL2HD, TimeStretch, and some audio enhancement options.
ALL2HD basically converts your Standard definition movies into HD format. The differences between the two are only noticeable if you use demo mode; and certainly not as drastic as comparing an HD channel to a standard channel, but there is a slight improvement in the picture even with my standard LCD computer monitors. I suspect the difference would be more noticeable on my 61" LED DLP television, but it's too much trouble moving my computer in order to test it out.
TimeStrech is a feature that is aimed toward laptop users who are not near a power outlet. It basically speeds up the playback (or slow it down) without distorting the audio. You can speed it up to 2x the playback meaning you can watch a movie in half the time saving your precious battery life. You can slow it down to half the playback speed as well, but listening watching a movie going half the speed is rather disturbing.
There are also some audio enhancements you can use as well, and I do notice a little enhancement in audio quality although the default audio sounds just fine to me. There are also a wide range of other video/audio options as well but there are too many to name.
I have no complaints about the software, but if you already have DVD software on your PC and don't have a BlueRay Drive then this new version of WinDVD may not be worth it. Even with the nice features I don't think it warrants a new purchase unless you have a BlueRay player and absolutely need DVD/BlueRay playback on your PC. |
