Restoration and Customer Service Nightmare! |
You can backup data with external hard drives or services like this and it's so easy, a pre-schooler could do it. If you need to get your files back, though, then it's a nightmare.
I called customer support to walk me through the restore and was told it would be a simple, 3 step process. A 30 step difficult process is a far more accurate description. I'm not a techie or a geek, but I'm very comfortable and proficient using computers and the internet. The lack of clear, simple instructions for restoring data is inexcusable. Customer service was horrible (see carbonite's own web site for comments on their poor customer service), slow, and inefficient.
I bought a new external hard drive, Acronis software, and signed up for Dell's online backup service. Carbonite is the worst and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. |

A Disaster Of Epic Proportions! |
Backing up data is simple, because it's automatic. All backup services, however, make backing up simple. The real test of a product's worth is whether it can restore your data in the event of a hard drive failure, crash, or format. In that regard, Carbonite fails miserably.
I had to format my hard drive. Once back and running, I wanted to restore my files. Clicking "restore" DOESN'T restore your files, if you had to format! You must first "transfer". But that info ISN'T on the web site or in the program. I only found out through their live chat technical service.
Technical service is the worst of any product I have ever used. I was on hold on the phone for 2 HOURS and 41 minutes before a recording said, "We are having problems" and automatically hung up on me! While on hold for technical support, they offer you expedited service - for an additional $20.00 - talk about cheesy! If the expedited service was available as an option at signup, I probably would have done it. To be pitched that product while waiting, however, it the ultimate insult to a customer.
Avoid this product at all costs. |

I made the mistake of purchasing multiple years for both of my home computers. I had Carbonite for a couple of years previously. Now Carbonite gets stuck on one of my computers and won't back up any changed data. I have reinstalled numerous times and it works once then freezes again. So I decide to call customer service and now they want me to purchase a priority service package for $19.95. In other words to buy service that they already should provide with the subscriptions. Take my advice save your money and back up with Acronis on a portable hard drive. |

Carbonite review |
|
Software was very easy to set up and use. It automatically selected my documents on the C drive. Since I store most digital data files on a partitioned drive, that had to be selected separately. The first backup did take a long time despite leaving the computer on for 8 nights. My data files were over 50 GB in size, so I assume this is normal. It does slow down Internet speed during this first download. I am satisfied overall, since I rely more and more on digital files in an attempt to have a paperless office. The price was reasonable, especially with the rebate for the first year. |

Does what it said it would do. |

Installed the product and it started to back up files--you have to check to make sure it is doing what you want it to, otherwise it picks the files. It took about two weeks but it tells you that it might take a while. Other than that, it runs in the background and checks for new items. [...] I recommend this product. I am on my third external hard drive and I don't trust them as the only backup. |
