Poorly designed, Mediocre functionality, Not worth the money! |
**PLEASE NOTE: My review is based on my use of the 2008 version of this product which I bought at Best Buy in January 2008. I decided to write this review to warn other potential buyers.
I have a seven year old son in second grade, and I had seen this product several times in the store when purchasing other learning games. The advertising for this product is very convincing, it gives a detailed description of the subjects that are supposedly covered and screenshots of the the games, so I finally decided to give it a try. I was tremendously disappointed by this product and extremely frustrated that I wasted $50 on it...especially since, as many of you know, software typically cannot be returned.
I almost gave this product two stars because it does have a decent practice platform in some of the subjects, unfortunately it's so difficult to navigate through the software, it's likely you may never find it in most cases--which was the case for us with two of the subjects that we installed. We only installed half of the cd's because we were so horribly disappointed with the product that we didn't even bother to install the rest of the cd's. As other reviewers mentioned, there is no instruction manual whatsoever, so your on your own in figuring out how to navigate the software once installed. I couldn't even get the spelling software to run properly once installed, so I can't comment on it, but the math section is not bad once we were finally able to figure out how to get to the practice section. The practice section does one thing: provide monotonous, boring, and repetitive practice. I actually felt bad subjecting my son to it, it seemed more like punishment. There is nothing "fun" or "engaging" about any of the activities. The box provides screenshots for the games in each subject, I couldn't find or load any games for the math section.
This product did not deliver on any of its promises...and is a waste of money. If you are looking for engaging, educational software for your child, check out jumpstart brand and scholastic brand products, my son loves the jumpstart and scholastic software and has had great results with them. |

Supplemential materials |
Elementary Success is designed to be a helping tool, not a replacement for regular school. We use this program for my 8 year old son, we enjoy the levels and the opportunity to decide which programs we want to load into our Pc. The ease of use could not be any better.
The bright colorful images help children associate better with the information they are learning. The Math game helps teach quick adding, and subtracting. Quixel's Spanish game helps with learning every day words like cookies and milk. The videos on geography are all first class.
If you are looking for a tool to add to your home school classes, this would be one I would consider.

Don't waste your time |
|
This item is not even worth 1 star. All it does is freeze up. When you go to Topics support page it gives instructions on downloading patches. However the method that is recommended to download patches does not exist (at least in this dimension). It is going right back. |

Good for the price (20 bucks) |
My son loves this, he is only 5 and a half years old. Some of the simple stuff is pretty repetitive - but he can skip through the easy stuff quite fast while still having fun. He found the Foreign languages interesting, "English?", Spanish and Chinese. Math is quite difficult - but he still manages to learn new concepts - they are explained in some detail. He doesn't like the encyclopedia, but I think that he will like it when he is a bit older.
We got this package for 20 dollars - well worth it for 9 CD-roms and the hours of study fun. My son has even learned to install the software himself, he loves discovering the new stuff on each of the CD-roms. Yes there are patches to download from the support website for one of the CDs - I had no problems installing the fix/patch.
OK - this software isn't as polished as a Disney CD-ROM or DVD - still I wouldn't describe it as worthless. |

Worthless |
I agree with another reviewer who said they'd give this program 0 stars of possible. I got a screen on the math program that told me it was a demo copy and if I saw that screen, it meant I'd purchased an illegal copy. What? I bought it from Sam's Club!! It also made my new computer freeze up, and the history section was awful... all it did was give a list of events or inventions and says to list them in chronological order. And the science program teaches only about earthworms, moths, and butterflies.
Total waste of money. I had to drive 20 miles back to Sam's Club and demand my money back. |
