Product Description
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server with 10 CALs . Microsoft Windows 2000 Server is the easy way to Internet-enable your business. As businesses come to rely more and more on the Internet, they have the opportunity to grow, extend their networks to partners and customers, and consider new ways to bring their products and services to market. To take advantage of these opportunities, businesses need an infrastructure that can readily respond to market forces, delivers high reliability, efficient management, ease of use, and supports the latest advances in networking hardware. Americancivilwar.com Review
Windows 2000 Server provides the ease of administration, reliability, and scalability needed by any business. This edition is bundled with the new Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0 and contains built-in support for up to four CPUs. With a wide variety of new server technologies and tools, this new OS raises the bar for powering applications with Intel hardware, both on and off the Web.

While Windows NT 4.0 certainly won points for ease of administration and a wide range of tools for Web applications, Windows 2000 marks a significant increase in reliability and performance. For one thing, Microsoft has worked hard to reduce the need to reboot this operating system, and with support for plug-and-play, you can change hardware and software settings while keeping your server online.

The technology behind Windows 2000 offers new integration of cutting-edge technologies for today's multitiered Web applications. Under Windows NT, various server-side features were spread out among different tools. Windows 2000 integrates transaction and resource management, message queuing, and distributed objects into its new COM+ standard. The powers of COM+ and the new emphasis on reliability and scalability add up to a Web platform you can entrust with more and more of your business.

Of course, ease of administration is still a strength. Windows 2000 offers both browser-based and stand-alone tools for simplifying Web, software, and hardware administration. A significant new technology here is the Active Directory standard (based in part on LDAP), which can simplify maintaining corporate directories. (For instance, phone numbers for your entire organization can now be stored in a single place.) With some planning, Windows 2000 is ready to reduce your administration TCO, with support for such features as pushing software installations to clients. New policy-based administration makes it a snap to manage accounts and security settings.

Whether you are new to Windows or upgrading from NT, Windows 2000 offers a truly compelling array of technologies and tools for getting more reliability and performance out of Windows and the Intel platform. It's a server-side solution that can do serious work for any business organization--for both its corporate intranet and Internet presence. --Richard Dragan

Americancivilwar.com Product Description
Windows 2000 Server includes improved network, application, and Web services. It provides increased reliability and scalability, lowers your cost of computing with powerful, flexible management services, and provides the best foundation for running business applications.

Windows 2000 Server makes application development and deployment easier by including services developers require. High-level interfaces are provided for commonly used services such as communications, security, database access, and the Active Directory services. These interfaces can be used from virtually any programming or scripting language, making for rapid development. Windows 2000 also provides a low-level C++ API for advanced application developers and higher performance.

Windows 2000 Server application services are Internet-enabled at their core. This aids flexibility because applications can be deployed on the corporate intranet, or an existing client-server model can be used. Integrated communications and terminal services let more people use an organization's applications in more places, on a broader range of legacy devices.

...
It's cludgy, unreliable and highly vulnerable to security breaches; for much less money there are far more intelligent choices.

Surprising Reliability
A lot of people like to make negative comments about Microsoft's Product Reliability, but let me tell you, I installed this piece of software for my small business and Wow!!! Everything is running smooth. We are getting far more done than we previously did with that "open source" Linux Nonsense. I haven't had any problems as of yet! Microsoft says up-time of five nines, but I say 100% !!!

Rocks - build web server with it NOW!
Has everything you need for a small to medium size web site: Web, DNS, SMTP, FTP,etc. Speed is phenomenal. NEVER goes down!!

Slow but steady.
So far, I'm impressed with 2000's stability, although it is EXTREMELY slow. I am running it on a GHZ Athlon with 655MBpc133 so it's kinda strange that it runs so slow. I am slowly learning about the various tools that it comes with, and most of it is reletively intuitive.
I am slightly puzzled by a few features, but tutorials online are easy to find.
Personally, I am impressed by the framerate that I get in benchmarking utilities, if not in the OS.

All in all, If you are in need of an overly expensive operating system that WILL NOT DIE, It's great. Otherwise, avoid it like the plauge.

What a great OS!
I upgraded to this from Windows 98, and I never had experience running a server before. From the moment I put in the CD I knew I would love this OS. It is very easy to use, and within a day I had a http and ftp server running perfectly (I had no experence setting them up before). This OS is also much more stable than Win 95/98/ME. It has only crashed on me a few times in 4 months! The only bad thing about this OS is that it can not run any DOS program, so this is not the ideal OS for old skool gamers. All in all this OS is definetly worth the price.
