Editorial Reviews for  'The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy'

Product Description
Your Girlfriends, of course -- at least, the ones who've been through the exhilaration and exhaustion, the agony and ecstasy of pregnancy. Four-time delivery room veteran Vicki Iovine, "the Carrie Bradshaw of pregnancy" (Wall Street Journal), talks to you the way only a best friend can -- in the book that will go the whole nine months for every mother-to-be. Now, in this newly revised and updated edition, get the lowdown on all those little things that are too strange or embarrassing to ask, practical tips, and hilarious takes on everything pregnant.

What Really Happens to Your Body -- from morning sickness and gas to eating everything in sight -- and what it's like to go from being a babe to having one.

The Many Moods of Pregnancy -- why you're so irritable/distracted/ tired/light-headed (or at least more than usual).

Plus, the latest scoop on . . .

Staying Stylish -- You may be pregnant, but you can still be the fashionista you've always been (or at least you don't have to look like a walking beach ball) -- wearing the hippest designers and proudly showing off your bump.

Pregnancy Is Down to a Science -- from in vitro fertilization to scheduled C-section, the latest technology provides so many options, alternatives, and tests, it can all be downright confusing.

. . . and much more! For a reassuring voice or just a few good belly laughs, turn to this straight-talking guide on what to really expect when you're expecting.

Americancivilwar.com Review
Beginning with the "10 Greatest Lies About Pregnancy" (number 10: Lamaze works), and ending with postpartum dementia, Vicki Iovine's Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy has fast become the laywoman's mouthpiece for the American pregnancy experience. Iovine is irreverent, sassy, and incredibly reassuring as she exposes the "truths" of pregnancy and childbirth, from sex to cellulite to cesareans. Iovine birthed four kids in six years, none of them twins, which certainly qualifies her as an expert. The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy does reveal Iovine's particular cultural biases (pregnant or not, most of us don't have record-producer husbands, hang out with supermodels, or wear size-four pants) and philosophical beliefs (she's not a particularly strong proponent of natural childbirth or nursing), but, taken with a grain or two of salt, she provides many hilarious moments, acres of advice, and honest reassurance readers will find nowhere else. --Ericka Lutz

Customer Reviews for  'The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy'

Helpful, but not really my kind of girlfriend...
I found the tone of this book to be a bit too "freak out" for my tastes. She uses exaggeration for comic effect, but in this case, when you're going into pregnancy for the first time, not knowing what to expect, it is hard to separate exaggeration from reality. For example, the weight gain. I was seeing myself becoming the stay-puffed marshmallow woman after reading this book-- not just during pregnancy but afterwards too. Maybe the idea is that if you can make peace with that, you will be okay for whatever happens... But she's the same way about sagging this and gaping that... Anyway, if you want a real in-your-face "you'll never be the same again" perspective to prepare you for anything, this book will give it to you.

I am giving this book 3 stars because she did help me through the first trimester cramping-- I was worried that they meant the pregnancy was going to end until I read her book (she makes a point of saying not to worry about those, as she had worried about them a lot). She also gives a good discussion of her genetic testing experiences/choices.

Best book I read when I was pregnant
This was given to me as a gift during my pregnancy, and is now the number one thing I recommend to pregnant women! It was informative AND made me laugh out-loud. I also bought "What to Expect..." but I don't like the question-answer format as well as the chapter segments in "Girlfriend's Guide." Great, great book.

Not a Guide for a Good Friend
My wife was given this book early in her pregnancy. I know many reviewers say that you need to have a sense of humor to appreciate this book, but this book was not that funny and did nothing to "guide" us through our pregnancy. All it did was scare my wife by talking about all the bad things about being pregnant. This is a good book to read if you don't want to get pregnant or are jealous of those that are.

Great for first-time moms!
As a first-time mom, I found this book both funny and helpful to "ease" into what was to come! For excrutiating, detailed, pregnancy play-by-play, search for a "medical" book. I did not want information overload and an exhaustive list of things that could possibly go wrong to obsess over. This was perfect for me to be able to ask follow up questions of my doctor where I was concerned or wanted to know more.

Keep the humor alive during pregnancy!
This is an easy read and kept me laughing out loud! My husband had to endure my reading every other sentence out loud to him because I thought it was so funny or so true to what I was going through. The author hits on every possible thing that could happen to you during pregnancy. Although it isn't meant to be a medical explanation of what's going on, this was the only book I ever read that mentioned low back pain/pressure as a problem in early pregnancy. I experienced a lot of that in my first few weeks and it was so reassuring to know it didn't mean I was miscarrying since the author experienced it and went on to have healthy babies. It's a wonderful book to read in between all that technical medical stuff from the other books.
