Editorial Reviews for  'More Than a Mistress'

Product Description
“A stunningly good work of romantic fiction. Mary Balogh reaches deep and touches the heart.”–Joan Johnston, New York Times bestselling author of The Cowboy

In her most captivating novel to date, Mary Balogh, the premier writer of Regency romance, invites you into a world of scandal and seduction, of glittering high society and intrigue, as an arrogant duke does the unthinkable–he falls in love with his mistress….

She raced onto the green, desperate to stop a duel. In the melee, Jocelyn Dudley, Duke of Tresham, was shot. To his astonishment, Tresham found himself hiring the servant as his nurse. Jane Ingleby was far too bold for her own good. Her blue eyes were the sort a man could drown in–were it not for her impudence. She questioned his every move, breached his secrets, touched his soul. When he offered to set her up in his London town house, love was the last thing on his mind….

Jane tried to pretend it was strictly business, an arrangement she was forced to accept in order to conceal a dangerous secret. Surely there was nothing more perilous than being the lover of such a man. Yet as she got past his devilish façade and saw the noble heart within, she knew the greatest jeopardy of all, a passion that drove her to risk everything on one perfect month with the improper gentleman who thought love was for fools.

Balogh More than a Mistress
Very, very disappointed by the end. I want more romance, less bitterness. By the end, I just wanted to see the heroine run away. Balogh is one of my favorite authors, but this book is not. The next in the series is better, but still not great. The Simply series was excellent, but my favorites were the books from the Bedwyn series.

Still waiting
I bought this novel in the same book as 'No Man's Mistress', and let's just say i'ts going to take alot for me to get to THAT story. I couldn't find anything to like about ANY of the characters in this book - they were all just blahh... I found myself skimming the pages at the end of the book because it was just silly. Now i'm all one for the big drama at the end - hero feels betrayed, mentally hurts the heroine, hero begs for forgiveness, heroine makes him sweat.... then happily ever after... but it just didn't feel heartfelt, like it was written without any thought... Makes me wonder if I read the same book as everyone else. - My verdict... don't bother!

My Favorite Balogh Title
I loved this book. I appreciated that Jane stayed true to herself and her values. She understood that she agreed to be Tresham`s mistress since she was falling in love with him. She proved to be the perfect counterpart to Tresham`s haughty and arrogant personality. In turn he was her perfect counterpart to her determination to be herself.

Intensely riveting
This is the second Mary Balogh book I've read after Simply Dangerous. Both are deliciously intense and utterly romantic. They are the kind that you don't want to put down and re-read immediately after finishing.

Balogh writes like no other - the dialogue between the two main protagonists are always wonderful done. I particularily like Balogh because her Regency England is so wonderfully English and has none of the American inflection that most writers so carelessly and criminally inject in their books.

I enjoyed this book immensely but Simply Dangerous must still be my favourite. One thing that bothers me to no end is the preoccupation Balogh has with dukes and quizzing glass! Please! I hope I will encounter no more of this odious pretentious object!

....very satisfying!
I really liked this book.....I wouldn't say that it's Balogh's best, but it's definitely good.

Jane Ingleby is on the run and is hiding from her uncle who wants her prosecuted for murder and theft. She happens across a duel in progress and interupts it by screaming for the two men to "STOP". Jocelyn Dudley, the Duke of Tresham, is distracted and winds up being shot in the leg. Angry and in want of "payback" for Jane's distraction, he "employs" her as his nurse for the duration of his healing period. This time sets the stage for this "courtship".

Jane is a breath of fresh air. She is not afraid to stand up for herself, even against the intimidating Jocelyn. She puts him in his place from the start, and their dialouge is witty, fun, flirtatious, and engaging.

Jocelyn is really quite a sheep in wolf's clothing. He has dad issue's, man issues's, and feels that he has to live up to a bad reputation. With Jane, all that changes. When Jane agrees to become his mistress, the book gets really good! They share some memorable moments and scenes that will leave you smiling and sighing.

I recommend this book. As I stated earlier, it's not necessarily my favorite Balogh...A Precious Jewel is that, but it is entertaing, sweet, and very satisfying.
