PROTECT AND SERVE shows that true love is a force to be reckoned with. Gwyneth Bolton is an awesome romance writer. This is the first of a series with the same characters, and I am so looking forward to the sequel!

Gwyneth Bolton has a style of writing that just flows on the pages. She is able to bring the characters to life in her books. Protect And Serve had several subplots that added to the dynamics of the storyline. It will leave you longing to learn more about the other Hightower men. Ms. Bolton has done it again!

This is a first for me . . . |
I usually don't rate a book when I feel it merits less than 4 stars, but I couldn't help myself with this book. First, let me be clear, Gwyneth Bolton is, without question, an excellent writer, and I look forward to reading her again. In this novel, it's her characters that are bothersome, particularly the women. Penny Keys started out as a strong character bearing up under a difficult situation with the loss of her grandmother and a mother only a daughter could love. But throughout the novel, this stong, Black, career-minded woman caved in to her high school heartthrob, Jason Hightower, because he was cute? Built? Sexy? Because she felt guilty for what she did in high school?
Give me a figgin' break! Ms. Bolton tells us that Penny Keys is supposed to be a confidant, mature 30+ year old business woman, but those traits get lost somewhere because Jason is "a man" without any socially redeaming qualities? She caves to penis power? To outside pressure? It just did not play for me. I know that romance novels are supposed to have happy endings, and Ms. Bolton had to get there in 248 pages, but in my view she slaughtered the image of Black, professional, entreprenueral women on her way to the finale. I am hoping for better characters in her next novel. |

True Love Never Dies |
Protect and Serve is a wonderful love story that I could not put down once I started to read it. Immediately I was cheering for Penny and Jason to get it together. Unfortunately, this young couple is kept a part for fifteen long years because of a web of lies, a mean spirited family member, and hurtful words spoken in anger.
Ms. Bolton does an excellent job of pulling the reader into Penny's and Jason's world. I absolutely loved how she captured the very essence of inner city life and its issues to weave a very heartfelt, realistic story of family, friendships, and intimate relationships. I can't wait for the next Hightower story! |
