Product Description

A charming and briliant dentist,
tied to two murders nearly two decades apart....
A twisting case in which past and present colide....

Go inside one of the most compelling double homicide investigations of our time with Ann Rule, who was given exclusive access inside the case of Bart Corbin, the "handsome twin" responsible for murder times two.

Bart Corbin appeared to share an idyllic life with his pretty wife, Jennifer: a home in an upscale Atlanta suburb, two adorable young sons. But there were secrets below the surface -- including an affair of Bart's that drove Jenn to look for love on the Internet -- that would prove deadly on the December morning Jenn was found with a single gunshot wound to her head. Police suspected suicide, but her disbelieving family knew Jenn had been excited to move on from Bart with someone she had met online. As disturbing clues emerged, a relentless county investigator dredged up a shattering revelation: fourteen years earlier, Bart Corbin's former girlfriend, lovely dental student Dolly Hearn, also died -- a gunshot wound to her head that was ruled a suicide. It was a chilling link in the chain that would ensnare the remorseless killer behind both tragic deaths: Bart Corbin.

And if you think you know everything about this outright shocking case, discover the truth behind the headlines -- and one incredible irony on which the entire case turned -- in

Ann Rule at her best
For several years, Bart and Jennifer Corbin seemed to have the perfect marriage - including a nice house and two young sons. But there are cracks in the marriage - Bart is having an affair and is too controlling and Jenn starts to look for love elsewhere. Jenn decides to leave Bart and is finally happy, which is why, when her body is found with a single gunshot wound to the head, her family doesn't believe it was suicide. The police aren't convinced either and start digging into Bart's past. Soon they discover that Jenn's not the first loved one Bart has lost - a former girlfriend, Dolly Hearn, also died from a gunshot wound to the head.

"Too Late to Say Goodbye" is Ann Rule's page turning account of the true story of murderer Bart Corbin and his victims Jenn Corbin and Dolly Hearn. As she does so well, Rule recreates the lives of the victims in such a way that by the end of the book readers feel as if they knew Jen and Dolly. Rule also does a good job of looking into Brad's life and what led him to kill. It is creepy to read what Brad did to Dolly after she broke up with him and frustrating to read as she never quite realized how obsessive he was and how the authorities never quite took her seriously. Some of the most interesting parts of the book are as the investigators reopen Dolly's case and step by step prove Bart killed her as well as Jenn.

Jenn's case is the most recent and more sensational (she was involved in an on-line romance that took a very odd twist) but Rule gives equal room to both murders. She is also sensitive to the twists and turns of Jenn's obsession with the on-line game Everquest and her on-line romance - she writes about it matter-of-factly without sensationalizing it. The book is full of pictures of all involved and the pictures of Dolly and Jenn serve to emphasize what a loss both their families suffered.

"Too Late to Say Goodbye" is Ann Rule at her best.

Find out what really happened to Dolly and Jenn
What really made this book such a great read (of course other than the fact that it was written by Ann Rule!) is that all of the modern technology of today was embedded in this true crime novel.

Bart Corbin was truly a master of manipulation and almost pulled off the same crime two times. His MO was to make the death of each of the women who loved him look like a suicide and I suppose he thought because a significant amount of time had elapsed between crimes, he wouldn't get caught.

While stuck in her current situation with Bart, Jenn Corbin thought she had possibly found her soulmate online, playing a RPG game. This turned out to be yet another disappointment for her, but even after her possible 'Soul Mate' revealed that 'he' was really a 'she', Jenn was still determined to forgive and work towards getting her and her children out of her current situation with Bart.

I highly recommend this book to anyone so you can read for yourself what happened to Dolly and Jenn. Manipulating, controlling sociopaths come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and professions.

More Applause for Ann Rule!!
I have said this before: If you are a fan of Ann Rule, you must buy this book! As a lawyer and a big fan of true crime books, I have been reading her stories for years and I find her to be one of the sharpest observers of criminal behavior out there. Other writers exploit the blood and guts and the lurid details but Ann tells a story and makes you feel for all the players from the victims to the cops to the prosecutors and the other people who are close to the crime.

There are not too many other books that break away from the pulpy, cheap exploitations, but I would heartily endorse Ron Franscell's The Darkest Night: Two Sisters, a Brutal Murder, and the Loss of Innocence in a Small Town and James Ellroy's My Dark Places and Joseph Wambaugh's The Onion Field because they all do much deeper into the effects of crime on the living.

Ann Fans Pounce!
With so many positive reviews, there is no need for a lengthy review of "Too Late to Say Goodbye". There is a special feature here: TLTSG features not one but two murders. One is set in eastern Georgia, near Augusta, the other in an Atlanta exurb. The suspected perp is a young semi-successful dentist, Bart Corbin. Corbin is one of those guys readers may instantly dislike. AR is at her best here. The suspense is maintained far into the text. The authoress ably portrays both the careful investigation by the Georgia Law plus the pain felt by the two victimized families. This reviewer has railed about excessive verbiage in other true crime stories but no "sharp blue pencil" is needed here. The length is just about right. AR had a lot of material to deal with. As the header states, Ann fans should simply pounce on that "Add to Cart" button. New readers should be pleased but could always sample shorter AR works like "The I5 Killer" or "The Want Ad Killer" before proceeding. TLTSG is definitely one of the authoress' better efforts. That infamous "Ann Rule Rule" is definitely in effect here: The back cover and those centerfold photos divulge all. Skip them until the finish. The pictures do however, personalize the two tragic victims. How sad that these young women met their senseless demise as they did.

Adequate
Typical Ann Rule biases and opinions dot the presentation. Victims are presented as almost saintly and she chooses to ignore the fact that early investigators could have done more.

Rule even tosses out a missing person in another part of the country at the end of this book and tries to link the killer in this book to her, which, if anyone is familiar with that case, knows is incredibly off-the-wall.

But, this book seems to have been well researched and is an interesting read.
