It's been over ten years since Big was killed. I grieved for him for a very long time. And then, as time passed, the icy wall of grief surrounding my heart began to thaw and I began to heal. I remarried, had more children, and continued to record and release more music. I continued to live my life. And while I can never discount the time I spent with Big, I've never felt the need to live in the past.
But sometimes, I still find myself thinking about Big being rushed the hospital, and I break down in tears.
It's not just because we hung up on each other during what would be our last telephone conversation. And it's not because I am raising our son, a young man who has never known his father.
It's partly all of those things. But mainly it's because he wasn't ready to go. His debut album was called Ready to Die. But in the end, he wasn't. Big never got a chance to tell his story. It's been left to others to tell it for him. In making the decision to tell my own story, it means that I've become one of those who can give insight to who Big really was. But I can only speak on what he meant to me.
Yet I also want people to understand that although he was a large part of my life, my story doesn't actually begin or end with Big's death. My journey has been complicated on many levels. And since I am always linked to Big, there are a lot of misconceptions about who I really am.
I hope that in reading my words, there is inspiration to be found. Perhaps you can duplicate my success or achieve where I have failed. Maybe you can skip over the mistakes I've made. Use my life as an example-of what to do and in some cases, what not to do.
It's not easy putting your life out there for the masses. But I've decided I'll tell my own story. For Big. For my children. And for myself. |

very happening book |

faith evans has presented a very interesting book on her time with biggie, puffy and the long rumored situation with 2pac and her kids, and her life before and now. faith evans has always been a interesting person to me and this book covers a wide range of topics and puts some things into perspective. worth checking out.i tend to be hit and miss with her music but i respect her and she is cool. |

Very good read! |

Read her story in 2 days. I enjoyed reading about her life, especially during the Biggie period. I've always been a fan of her music especially the first album. To hear what was going on in her life at the time now sheds a lot of light to the tone of that first CD. Again I say, great read. |

I thought this book was a very good fast read. I feel like she kept it honest good or bad and who can fault her for that. |

The Keeper of Faith!! |

Enlightening! Entertaining! Surprised!!! Faith laid it all out on the table... for her fans, family, and especially herself!! Just reading her book, took me back to those days of Bad Boy (when they were HOT!); hearing 'rumors about so & so... Crazy!! I was quite shocked & taken aback when I read about TuPac, then Lil Kim!!!! Who knew Faith had it in her... I'm so happy that she was able to come to terms with herself & write her story... I'm happy she found it in herself to tell it to us!! Faith, I wish you continuous strength & faith to keep on doing YOU!!! |

I'm a big fan of Faith Evans & have supported her projects since she debuted in the mid 90's. As I read her story I was taken back to my first impressions of her from those early interviews & performances where she seemed so shy & uncomfortable which I couldn't reconcile with the "Mrs Notorious BIG" persona.
This book really details her "courtship" and subsequent marriage to Biggie but the previous relationships she was involved in leading up to Biggie certainly helped me understand her as a woman. Although the multiple relationships she had made me question her judgement, I also understand that she was in a search for love which led her to make the choices that she made.
I appreciate the conversational tone & flow of the book in addition to her taking the time to explain the industry lingo. My favorite passages were when she details her own "come up" along with the Bad Boy label - I'd forgotten that Faith is a songwriter in her own right and that in addition to her soulfully smooth voice is how she grinded her way into the biz.
Overall I felt that Faith was extremely open and honest about her entire life thus far and exposed things that she really did not have to regarding he relationships and using weed to unwind so what I'm going to say next is difficult. Like other readers have stated, her recollection about the Tupac incident rings false - my skepticism stems from the fact that she claims:
1) to have not known about the animosity between the two camps,
2) not to have known that Tupac was signed to Death Row & she probably SHOULD NOT have accepted any offer of work from him without first checking with her label;
3) not to have known that Tupac sincerely believed Biggie & Puff set him up and at the time she worked with him there was still a lot of animosity between them that had not been resolved despite Biggie telling her that things were "cool"
Out of all the rappers in the world, WHY would she agree to work with him at that time??!! That question I had was never answered satisfactorily by her explanation but at this point only Faith & God know what happened so I'll accept it with a grain of salt.
Overall though reading Faith's life story confirmed my initial thoughts that she is a sensitive, reserved, yet highly talented woman. I really like the comparison that another reviewer drew between Aretha Franklin/Gladys Knight and Mary J Blige/Faith Evans - it's totally on point and further I believe that if Faith had been handled by someone like Clive Davis, she would have more acclaim (outside of the r&b field).
I'd highly recommend this book to fans and those who may only be curious about the behind the scenes story of Bad Boy, Puff, Lil Kim, Mary, Misa, etc. This is also the triumphant story of a woman with a lot of heart, courage, determination and yes, FAITH who perservered through a lot in her young life and seems to have settled into a more successful life as wife and mother.
**I'd also like to give credit to the woman who helped Faith gather her thoughts, impressions and stories to shape this page-turner, Aliya S. King. Having read a few other books by women in the hip-hop era and found them lacking in vision and jumping all over the place, I found this book to be seamlessly cohesive, chronological and interesting. My only wish is that there had been more time spent on her years away from Bad Boy and the creation of her FIRST LADY album with Capitol Records. |
