Editorial Reviews for  'Skip Beat!, Vol. 14 (Skip Beat (Graphic Novels))'

Product Description
Kyoko Mogami followed her true love Sho to Tokyo to support him while he made it big as an idol. But he's casting her out now that he's famous! Kyoko won't suffer in silence--she's going to get her sweet revenge by beating Sho in show biz!

Vie Ghoul is the new band burning up the charts by stealing Sho's moves, and Kyoko's hopping mad on his behalf. Kyoko's confrontation with Sho about his lack of action doesn't go as well as she hoped--Sho gets violent, and the front man for Vie Ghoul gets a good look at Kyoko's demons. And both men seem a little more interested in Kyoko than Ren would like...

Skip Beat Vol. 14
Once again an excellent continuation of the story that has you wanting the next volume right away.

A Love Triangle Is Born!
At the beginning of this volume, we find out that the public is becoming curious about the girl playing the murderous angel in Sho's promo clip. Because of this, Kyoko is invited to appear on a Japanese variety show. Also there is the devil himself, Sho, and his new rivals, the band Vie Ghoul. Kyoko avoids Sho like the plague, but she soon has a run in with Reino, the lead singer of Vie Ghoul. He takes all of five seconds to insult Kyoko, and when she finds out that the band is copying Sho, she is not happy. She confronts Sho, but he's unwilling to take action. This makes Kyoko really mad, and they get into a big fight. Later, when Kyoko has further inteactions with Sho, Ren starts to worry that Sho might have feelings for her... It's been obvious that a love triangle would develop from vol. 1, but it really begins in earnest here.

This was a wonderful volume. I say that about every volume of "Skip Beat," and I always mean it, but this one was especially good. It seemed natural that Kyoko should get angry on Sho's behalf, even though she hates him. And the fight they have really shows how well she understands him. I was expecting this to be a funny scene, but it was actually pretty intense. Kyoko still has the ability to get to Sho, even moreso since she's willing to confront him now. But Sho shows some real character development in this volume. He seems to be growing up a little. And we also start to really see that he has feelings for Kyoko. I really loved this part.

But I'm starting to get confused, because I like both sides of the love triangle. And I don't mean in a complacent "Eh, they're both kind of cute," way, either. I really like both of them. I've been a fan of Ren/Kyoko for a long time, but Sho's so childish and cute, and he has good chemistry with Kyoko. His feelings also come across well, and you can't help but sympathize with him. This is a huge accomplishment on Nakamura's part, considering that Sho started out as such a jerk. Even when he's being a jerk, he's funny and kind of adorable...

Anyway, back on topic, it's also great to see Ren's reaction to all this. He's really good at acting unconcerned in front of others, but he's really worried. It's really funny to see Mr. Yashiro goad him.

Volume 14 is emotionally charged and really sweet. And the intensity promises to escalate even more in volume 15...
