Editorial Reviews for  'The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel'

Product Description
He holds the secret that can end the world.

The truth: Nicholas Flamel was born in Paris on September 28, 1330. Nearly 700 years later, he is acknowledged as the greatest Alchemyst of his day. It is said that he discovered the secret of eternal life.

The records show that he died in 1418.

But his tomb is empty.

The legend: Nicholas Flamel lives. But only because he has been making the elixir of life for centuries. The secret of eternal life is hidden within the book he protects—the Book of Abraham the Mage. It's the most powerful book that has ever existed. In the wrong hands, it will destroy the world. That's exactly what Dr. John Dee plans to do when he steals it. Humankind won't know what's happening until it's too late. And if the prophecy is right, Sophie and Josh Newman are the only ones with the power to save the world as we know it.

Sometimes legends are true.

And Sophie and Josh Newman are about to find themselves in the middle of the greatest legend of all time.

From the Hardcover edition.

Harry Potter Fan? Then skip this book!
I went on to other books and decided to give this one a try then Chapter Four bothers me so much that I am not going to finish this book. Why? Harry Potter fans will understand this (paraphrased) "I learned the secret to the philosopher's stone . . .I learned how to change metal into gold . . . but more than this I found the recipe for a formulation of herbs and spells that keeps disease and death at bay." Then it goes on to say that this book is needed to make a potion they must drink once a month to keep them alive and without the recipe they will die.

Okay if you are over two centuries old because of a recipe would you not have it memorized by now? Besides that fact J.K. Rowling had stated that the Philosophers / Sorcerers stone was the elixir of life and Lord Voldemort wanted it to live . . . not a stupid book.

In a nutshell the author never understood J.K. Rowling and needs to realize the kind of audience he is writing to. This would be good for teenagers but the world of Harry Potter and beyond are way older than 15.

One plus naught makes ten
An adventure of two days where the world and all we know about it is turned upside down. A adventure that takes the reader through magical battles as one Goddess faces another, with extraordinary and ancient magic. Within the battle the keys to alchemy, the art of turning base metals to gold is introduced.

The Alchemyst, sulfur, is introduced as a character, who never fully tells things as they are but who is actively committed to guard the secret Codex. His wife, mercury, caught in the hands of the enemy and yet often the source of rescue. The twins, salt, represents the human race as they find themselves deep into a foreign world of ancient beings, all in a battle for power and survival. The enemy, Dr Dee, is a man of great knowledge but no conscience, is a foe who will not back down. He is willing to kill a Goddess and work with the most fowl to achieve his personal aims. Only with the help of the ultimate warrior, is the Alchemyst able to stay one step, sometimes less, ahead of Dr Dee's entrapments.

In the midsts of all the characters it is the boy, with a loose tongue with his golden aura and his twin sister who is more reserved but confident that stands out as the unlikely hero's that must step up to the game. They represent the duality of alchemy, the sun and the moon, which must be brought together. The future of the human race lies hidden within the human race itself.

One's magical power will be awakened and the other's will remain latent, so that when the one and the zero is brought together they will form a perfect ten. Duality is established to give birth to creation. Like with many of promises of alchemy no gold is produced in the end...the journey has only begun.

Overall, the book is an easy read and the story line is stripped from complexity. The movement from one scene to another is easy to follow. This is a joyful read that will enthrall the teenager who still have an imagination. References to modern technology, dates the book, but yet makes it more assessable for young readers. The chapters are short and concise and each a story within the story. The book allows for an enchanting escape from the pressures of a modern world into a shadowrealm of fantastical characters.

The Alchemyst is like a continuation of the Harry Potter Story
When I finished the last Harry Potter book, I felt a little sad for the story to end. Then I found The Alchemyst and it's like an addition to the Harry Potter story! Excellent Reading and I can't wait to read the next book about the Immortal Nicholas Flamel!

Perfect Christmas Gift For a Young Reader
I bought this book for my son after reading it myself. Looks to be an interesting series of books.

OUTSTANDING
This series has offically taken over my top spot as my favorite series. Previously the Harry Potter series and the Foundation Series by Issac Asimov were at the top. For that matter either, the Magician and the Alchemist books stand alone as my favorite two individual books.

Just outstanding.
