Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother's life. Then she's captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership. In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She's amazed she doesn't end up as his dinner—are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn't have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side . . . and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat. |

I picked this book up on a whim, and very glad i did.
It was a very enjoyable read. I reminded me of buffy with a twist.
I thought the characters were well developed, story line was good.

As a fan of the urban paranornal genre, I love this book. I recently started reading the second book and it's just as great. Frost just doesn't dissappoint. Can't wait for the next one! |

The Beginning of a New Addiction - Cat and Bones |
|
Other reviewers have summarized the story so I won't rehash the plot. The blub on the front of the book says, "Cat will have you staked in 5 seconds flat." I was definitely staked in the first pages. I love these characters! Bones is now one of my favorite alpha male vampire heros. Cat is unique and a great new addition to strong females in the genre. The book is labeled PNR, not UF. I think it is definitely more PNR. All of the characters, the good, the bad and the ugly have surprising depth, I don't know why a review I read before purchasing said otherwise. Glad I ignored it and went with the vast majority of reviews. Humor, action, mystery, sex, love, betrayal and a sterling cast of characters, really well written characters. I just lost a series by J.R. Ward, gladly tossed it in the trash bin of "What was she thinking". I am so delighted to have been led to this series! Jeaniene Frost is now on my "Pre Order" list with Alex Ivy, Lara Adrian, Jacki Frank and Christine Feehan. "THE" best "goes with the story" book cover I've ever seen. |

"I'm not afraid of the grave; I was born half in it." |
Until recently, I have always ignored Americancivilwar's "recommended for you" section. Then one day I decided to scan the pages and see what other urban fantasy and vampire books are out there. I picked this one randomly and did I just enjoy it!
Catherine Crawfield grew up with special abilities that always made her feel like an outsider. The fact that she was strangely pale didn't help matters. Resigned to being friendless, it wasn't until she was sixteen when her mother told her about her father. It turned out that Cat was a half-blooded freak... at least that's how she thought of herself after finding out that her father was a vampire who raped her mother. At sixteen, she staked her first vampire. From then on, she's been known by the townspeople as the creepy girl who liked to wander around at strange hours. If only they knew that she was out there saving the world! Then one night, she was abducted by a Master vampire. Now Bones was a bounty hunter who has been chasing another Master vampire for eleven years. Realising the gift that has landed in his lap, he coerced Cat into working with him. In exchange for sparing her life, Bones became Cat's trainer and a deadly partnership begun.
Admittedly, I couldn't get into the story initially. It wasn't until Bones took Cat to her first assignment that I started to get involved. After all, how often do you read about a perverted ghost who tried to get to third base? And that was just the start of it. I was drawn into Cat's world and found myself getting attached to the characters. I liked how the author slowly developed Cat's character from someone who was afraid to come to terms with herself, someone who felt compelled to punish herself for her father's sins and atone by killing vampires to please her mother. And the sad truth was, for someone who took joy in killing vampires, Cat was very much afraid of her mother. With Bones' help, we gradually see her grow a backbone where her mother was concerned and finally embrace her bloodline. And beware any vampire who crosses her especially when teamed with the sexy Bones. One half-dead, and the other totally dead, together they make a dangerous duo.
HALFWAY TO THE GRAVE is just a juicy beginning to a series that is sure to delight urban fantasy lovers. Jeaniene Frost serves a tasty treat with just the right amount of blood and gore, humor, romance and a bit of paranormal magic. I cannot wait to get my hands on One Foot in the Grave (Night Huntress, Book 2). |
