Product Description
What would you do if the man of your dreams hides the soul of a killer?

Jim Beckett was everything she'd ever dreamed of...But two years after Tess married the decorated cop and bore his child, she helped put him behind bars for savagely murdering ten women. Even locked up in a maximum security prison, he vowed he would come after her and make her pay. Now the cunning killer has escaped—and the most dangerous game of all begins....

After a lifetime of fear, Tess will do something she's never done before. She's going to learn to protect her daughter and fight back, with the help of a burned-out ex-marine. As the largest manhunt four states have ever seen mobilizes to catch Beckett, the clock winds down to the terrifying reunion between husband and wife. And Tess knows that this time, her only choices are to kill—or be killed.

Lisa Gardner sold her first novel when she was 20 years old. In 1993 she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in international relations. She lives in Rhode Island, where she is at work on her next novel of suspense.

Be Very Wary of Jim Beckett
WOW, this book did just that! It wowed me to the very end. Jim Beckett is a very taunting husband who leaves you THRILLED not to have a husband like him. His audacity and cleverness is to be applauded but his evilness feared. All I can say is I hope I never run into the likes of him anytime soon. And Tess, well Tess got up and found her Mojo in the end..........you go Tess!

A scarily good debut
Lisa Gardner's thriller debut is an impressive one. Young bride Tess weds a local cop, who quickly turns abusive. When she suspects that her husband Jim Beckett may be responsible for a series of violent murders, she goes to the police for help. The police apprehend her husband as he makes an attempt on Tess' life, but after Beckett escapes from prison she knows that she and her young daughter will not be safe until her husband is dead.

Tess turns to a former marine turned burned out mercenary in hopes of learning the gun and combat skills necessary to protect herself. In Iris Johansen fashion, her story melts the heart of the hardened soldier, and he becomes her protector as she and the police hunt down Beckett.

While the plot suggests that this book will be typical thriller fare, Gardner's writing makes it stand out from similar books. She finds a good balance between making sure the action does not let up, while still allowing the reader to get to know and understand her characters. The major players all have interesting back stories, and Jim Beckett is very, very scary. Gardner distinguishes herself from other romantic suspense authors such as Mariah Stewart by not shying away from violent scenes and grisly descriptions of killing. If you are a Karin Slaughter fan you will likely become a Lisa Gardner fan too after reading The Perfect Husband.

Sheer terror
Psychopathic cop, Jim Beckett, sought a malleable, innocent girl as his bride and found her in high school senior, Tess Williams, a girl accustomed to beatings by her vile father. Jim brainwashes her into becoming a "Stepford Wife", terrified of his rages and allowing him to keep total control of her mind and body. She gives him a beautiful daughter, Samantha but gradually realises that this man is pure evil and is probably a serial killer. When she has gathered enough evidence of his crimes, she turns him in to the police but he escaped from jail after 2 years, murdering 2 warders as he does so. Tess goes on the run with Sam, her daughter but realises that Jim will always hunt her down. She hires a mercenary, JT to train her in ways which would enable her to protect herself and her baby. The remainder of the book is gripping and tells of the hunt by Jim to find and kill her while she learns inner and outer strength to safeguard herself and Sam , while dealing meanwhile with the growing attraction between herself and JT, a man tormented by his past which was warped by his military father..I've never known so many evil fathers!

Another Hit
Another book I couldn't put down. Lisa has done it again. It was great to read about a abused wife who refused to back when others would have left the country. Again she is great at getting you hooked about the people she write about. Has everything to keep you up at night. Just wish she had more books out there.

Enjoyable fast paced read with interesting characeters
Another solid Lisa Gardner book. Not a 5* but definitely worth the read. It is enjoyable with ups and downs and mystery and drama... an good mix for a summer beach read or mellow weekend.
