Editorial Reviews for  'The Third Circle (Arcane Society, Book 4)'

Product Description
New York Times–bestselling author Amanda Quick’s new Arcane Society novel reveals the passionate— and paranormal—secrets of proper Victorian London.

Called “supremely addictive” by Booklist, the Arcane Society novels, written under both the Amanda Quick and Jayne Ann Krentz names, have pulled readers into a saga filled with steamy romance, drama, and dark intrigue. Her newest novel promises to mesmerize as well.

Leona Hewitt, disguised in men’s formal evening clothes, has secretly made her way into Lord Delbridge’s private museum to retrieve a relic stolen from her family. But someone else is in the dimly lit gallery on the same errand: a tall, blackcloaked man whose very voice is enough to cause her to fall into a trance.

Thaddeus Ware, a mesmerist with psychic gifts, is accustomed to fearful reactions from others—women, in particular. After all, a man who can control the minds of others could rob a lady of her virtue—completely unbeknownst to her. But Leona shows no trace of hysteria in his presence. A gifted crystal worker, she exerts a rather hypnotic power over the hypnotist himself. And she is determined to keep the coveted crystal they manage to recover by giving him the slip at a run-down London inn.

Thaddeus, on assignment for the Arcane Society, knows the menace Leona is courting by absconding with the crystal. A source of remarkable energy, it holds the potential for great destruction. Lord Delbridge has already killed to acquire the crystal, his key to membership in the elite, shadowy group known as the Third Circle. And, with the help of a ruthless hunter of preternatural skill—dubbed the Midnight Monster by the press—Delbridge intends to find Leona. With the stolen crystal in their possession, the danger is only beginning.

Better than Usual
This book reminded me why I love Amanda Quick/Krentz. Unusual characters, and intelligent heroine and a dark hero. Lush love scenes are well written too. Hope to see a lot more like this from Quick.

Enjoyable light read
Leona Hewitt is in the midst of a complicated burglary when she stumbles upon the corpse of a beautiful woman. Almost instantly afterward, she spots a man. If he's the killer, Leona is in trouble. She may be dressed as a man--a definite no-no in proper Victorian society--but she's no physical match for the powerful male who discovers her. Instead of the killer, she discovers he's something almost worse--an investigator for the mysterious Arcane Society and a man who's after the same crystal she seeks. Considering that the Arcane Society has attempted to keep the crystal from Leona's family for generations, there's certain to be trouble. With sexy men like Thaddeus Ware, though, trouble can sometimes be very pleasant.

Not pleasant at all is the reaction of Lord Delbridge--the man from whom the two steal the crystal. Delbridge needs that crystal desperately--with it, he'll be allowed membership in the elite Third Circle. Without it, not only will his application be denied, the Third Circle might decide he knows too much. Unfortunately for Leona and Thaddeus, Delbridge is intelligent and has hired a serial killer as an assistant (hence the body).

Author Amanda Quick writes a fun and sexy story. As with many of Quick's heroines, Leona is an intriguing (improbable) mix of innocence and energy--who finds sex to be just the thing. Secondary characters with lots of quirks add amusing touches to the adventure. Thaddeus doesn't really know what hits him when Leona moves into his life--but he serves as a stabilizing force in Leona's Mercurial life.

THE THIRD CIRCLE isn't Quick's strongest work, but it is an entertaining read. I found this one hard to put down.

Very enjoyable
Just finished this quick read, very enjoyable and like other reviewer have noted, nice to catch up with "old friends"

Not the best...but still good.
Homeruns don't happen every time a person gets up to bat. But this is definitely better than your average. So many authors seem to be putting out inferior books that it's nice to see someone who continues with witty dialog, fairly complex characters and interesting situations. I love JAK modern stories and her other historicals a bit more, but the Arcane series has been fun. This book is no exception. Some of the dialog and situations are laugh-out-loud funny and I love that her female characters are somewhat femnist for the time without being stupid. A good summer read. I'm looking forward to the next.

From J. Kaye's Book Blog
What flips me out of about this series is the author is writing under two different names - ugh! Now maybe fans knew about this, but I wasn't one. I read one of Quick's books - maybe two way back in my Rosemary Rogers & Kathleen E. Woodiwiss phase, but I since spread my wings. I read all sorts of genres now. So I had no clue that Jayne Ann Krentz was Amanda Quick. I almost missed half of this series!

First there was Second Sight (The Arcane Society, Book 1) by Amanda Quick. Then, get this, White Lies is The Arcane Society's second book. Who's the listed author? Jayne Ann Krentz. Hmmmm....

I opted not to make it a big deal because next is Sizzle and Burn. This is The Arcane Society's third book by Jayne Ann Krentz. I'm thinking that she had the idea in one era and then later decided to bring the book to the present day. Hey, at this point I am grabbing at straws trying to make sense of it all. My brain doesn't operate under confusing conditions.

Then I see the next book in the series, The Third Circle. Guess who it's by. Yes, it's under Amanda Quick. I am no longer asking questions. I don't wanna know why. I am just here to read. The series is additive no matter which era the book is written in. I haven't enjoyed a romance series this since Johanna Lindsey's Malory Family Series.

That said, THE THIRD CIRCLE is my least favorite. This is not to say it's bad. I just felt there were a few dry spots compared to the other previous three. So whatever future plans the author has for this series, I'll be there waiting for The Arcane Society, Book 5, no matter who will be listed as the author.
