Product Description |
She stood at peril's threshold -- then love beckoned her in… A prim, well-bred gentlewoman, Sara Fielding is a writer who puts pen to paper to create dreams. But now curiosity is luring her from the shelter of her country cottage into the dangerous world of Derek Craven -- handsome, tough, and tenacious -- and the most exciting man Sara has ever met. Derek rose from poverty to become the wealthy lord of London's most exclusive gambling house. And now duty demands that he allow Sara Fielding to enter his perilous realm of ever-shifting fortunes -- with her impeccable manners and her infuriating innocence. But there is a hidden strength and sensuality to the lady that captivates him beyond his better judgment. And in this world, where danger lurks behind every shadow, even a proper “mouse” can be transformed into a breathtaking enchantress -- and a cynical gambler can be shaken to his core by the power of passion and the promise of love. |

This is a spectaular read. I read this book in one sitting. Once I finished...I immediately read it over again. I mean this is great from beginning to end. I fell in love with the hero (Derek) and heroine(Sara). They were very likable characters. The story has a very good plot. The sex and romance scenes were wonderful. Great chemistry!!!! I've read many LK books and this is by far one of her best. Definately a keeper. The ratings on this book are not over rated. You will enjoy it!!!!!!!! VERY WELL DONE!!!!! |

Beautiful |
Sigh. I just finished reading this love story and am so inspired by the characters it has me itching to write my own story. This is probably one of the best, if not THE best, historical romance novel I've had the pleasure to read. I really am sad that it has ended. I've read so many romance novels in search of something great that would take my breath away and I think I just finished reading it.
Here is why: the character development was wonderful. It wasn't cliche and of a "formula" as some writers always resort to. The hero isn't a "rake" in the historical sense of the word, he's a tortured blackguard from the gutter who climbed his way to the top by any means necessary, even depravity. He doesn't love, doesn't want to be loved and doesn't even know what it means as he's never had it....until Sara.
Sara, the heroine isn't cookie cutter either. She's essentialy a "country mouse" with no blue blood, from a simple little country town who went to London for research as she is a writer. She isn't initially described as some beautiful, unnatainable flower that every man lusts after. She's just herself and her personality is wonderfully fresh and without airs. She's honest, gentle, naive, kind, compassionate, independant and realistic.
Sara meets Derek by saving his life from some men who are trying to kill him in the street. In exchange for saving his life all she wants is to live behind the scenes of his exclusive gaming club to research for her new novel. From the moment he meets her he's put off by her naivety and her goodness. He's never associated with anyone so innocent and unworldy before and doesn't want to be bothered, but he reluctantly agrees. In eachother they find they're opposites completely, but together they're complete with what the other is lacking.
Sara being nonjudgemental of Derek's past, saw something in him that only a few could see, and that was regardless of how he came up in the world, beneath his rough exterior was a man who needed love and who had a gentle soul. He rejected any kindness from her, feeling it would only lead to her demise. He felt as if he wasn't good enough for her and would only soil her with his hard lived life.
The love story that unfolds is so beautiful and in no way did it feel forced or contrived. Derek discovers that underneath Sara's glasses, bonnet and innosence is a real woman who needs love and affection and he can't help but be haunted by her. Always having any woman he wanted sexually, he never knew he'd ever want any woman emotionally as well, but he did and it made him want to distance himself from her more everyday, but the more he tried, the more closer he came toward her. Sara was raised in a gentler fashion and never imagined in her wildest dreams she could ever love someone as hard and cynical as Derek was. The more she came to know him the harder it was for her to hold onto her sense of self as she wanted to abandon all she was raised to be for this man, but in essence she was more herself with him than she'd ever been with anyone else.
This story is just so romantic, wrought with tension, so sweet and loving and the dialogue is the best I've ever read. I loved it from the first page to the last and I can't wait to read it again and again and again. Don't put this off....read it, you'll love it. |
