Second best of the series |
I wasn't expecting to like this book as much as I did. I had always thought Daisy was the most annoying character of the four Wallflowers. I was quite surprised at how much I did like her. The story was very funny and romantic. I loved that both characters realized very early on how they felt for each other but didn't let on to the other.
Matthew was a great tortured hero and it wasn't overdone like some other books. He loved Daisy, he knew he couldn't have her and there wasn't a lot of internal whining.
This would have been a 5 star for me if I hadn't started to hate Lillian. She was my favorite of the 4 wallflowers but Kleypas turned her into a controlling monster in this book.
Lovely book with a lot of laugh out loud moments for me. Sorry to see the series end. |

Very sweet, serviceable "Scandal" |
"Scandal in Spring" is a sweet little novel about two very nice and likable people. The plot offers no unexpected twists and the novel is conventional and predictable, but the heroine and the hero are such likable and interesting people that it's not hard at all to keep interested in the story.
Daisy Bowman is the last of the "wallflowers" to match up with a man and get married. She's intelligent, kind, and whimsical, amusing and insightful, and despite her romantic, dreamy nature, is also very practical and level-headed. Her father has given up on Daisy finding a husband on her own, and has decided to peremptorily hand her off to his favorite employee, Matthew Swift. Daisy is aghast, and determines that under no circumstances will she marry Swift, who is cold, analytical, greedy, and far too much like her father for her to ever love.
How surprising for her, then, when she discovers that the odious Matthew Swift is neither cold nor greedy, and in fact is kind, generous, loving, and everything attractive in a man. Also, he is entirely devoted to her.
This is a nice romance. The supporting cast are also very likable and lovely, and the interactions between the wallflower women is lovely to read. These women truly care about each other. Daisy and Matthew are a wonderful couple, and Matthew's passion for Daisy is delicious. Daisy's growing passion for Matthew is also wonderful.
This is SUCH a nice romance that the fact that it's not very exciting or suspenseful is not much of a defect. No plot twists, no surprises, not much action except for the end, and really, no really compelling reason to keep turning the pages. Still, the book is well written, with beautiful descriptions of the English countryside in spring, and Daisy and Matthew are such nicely drawn characters. I especially love how dreamy and creative and sensible Daisy is. And Matthew is intriguing with a complicated, semi-tortured character -- semi-tortured in that he has a Dark Past that will forever keep him from winning Daisy's love. This Dark Past is not very well done, altogether, and could have been better handled in the book.
Overall, a nice book. Fun to read, especially if you want to put yourself in a good mood and read something light and sweet. |

So sad that it's over...... |
I have enjoyed this series immensely! Finishing Scandal in Spring is kind of like saying goodbye to old friends. I am sorry to see it end. Each of these women are unique, and their stories are also this way. Out of all the ladies, Daisy was the least interesting to me....until now. Scandal in Spring is one of the best of the whole series..second only to Devil in Winter.
Boy do I ever like a self made man...and NO ONE can spin a self-made man story like Lisa Kleypas can. Matthew Swift is one of those men...and what a man he is. He's been in love with Daisy his whole life...another great storyline, and really wants to do right by her. He is close to the Bowman girl's father and is a brilliant businessman....he is the "total package".
I identify with Daisy. She is described as a "dreamer" and a "bookworm"..labels that I have had my whole life. She was really refreshing. When she got over her prejudices surrounding Matthew..she went "all in" and never looked back. I appreciated this trait in her. This is a passionate, all-consumming romance that will have you cheering by the end...and then reaching for a kleenex when you realize that all good things must come to an end. |

A fitting ending to a good series! |
The fourth and final installment to Lisa Klepas wildly popular Wallflower series, I thought nothing could top Evie's story (Devil in Winter). Okay, okay, I'm thinking DIW is STILL my favorite- but Scandal in Spring comes a very close second.
In SIS we get Daisy's story. Younger sister to Lillian Bowman (It Happened One Autumn), Daisy is the dreamy imaginative one of the self-proclaimed Wallflower girls. A typical head the clouds type a gal, you just know it's gonna take a special man to win her heart.
Matthew Swift is just such a man.
But Matthew, protégé to Lillian and Daisy's bulldozing father, up until this point, seems to be the last man Daisy could ever fall for. He's pragmatic with a head for numbers and most damning of all- seemingly well planted in her father's wealthy pockets.
But Mr. Swift is not all he seems to be and when he enters Daisy's world once again, he turns her ideas of who a perfect man might be right on it's ear.
I love Matthew. His mysterious past only adds to his appeal and when he helps Daisy rescue a goose and then promptly there after, ably soothes Annabelle and Simon's (Secrets of a Summer Night) teething baby, I fell for him hook line and sinker- just like Daisy.
Daisy is a charming heroine. She may seem a bit flighty to those who don't know her, but her humor, competitiveness, and love for novels proves otherwise. (She made me chuckle more than once in this novel!)
Like I said, Devil in Winter may be the one wallflower book that wins everyones' heart, but Scandal in Spring seals the deal for this series, make no mistake about it! (I particularly liked the tres romantique things Matthew says to Daisy by the end of the book! Classic, despite it's sentimentality. Yeah, I choked up.)
This is a simple enjoying read, as are most of Kleypas's novels for me, but certainly not one to be overlooked for it's seeming lack of depth! |
