A very good series! |
You know, I've read a lot of critical reviews concerning this book, but in my opinion I found it new and refreshing. Simply written, with no bs in between, this book, as well as the other two, had a steady flow that kept me turning pages. And as the series progressed, so did the writing, which gives me the impression that this is an author who is only going to get better as she goes. The story line in each book is creative, different, where as the characters are quite likable. Yes, I know that some of the reviews complain about the vampire's not really having a background, but I assure you, they do explain why a few times throughout the series when they speak of their 'rebirth.'
That being said, I'll move to the issues I had-nothing is without faults-concerning this series. For starters, the beginning of this particular book moved rather quickly from Abby breaking a vase, to being in Dante's arms, to a big explosion. After the explosion it was a bit hard to follow exactly what happened until Dante explains it to her a few chapters later, which in my opinion comes a bit too late. There was also the backgrounds she created for the female characters. They all seemed to have the same backgrounds, full of hardship, loneliness, and destitution, that really didn't seem to fit their current personalities, which I kind of found it hard to believe. I also found it a bit annoying with the over-usage of the word renegade. The word was unnecessary itself, in my opinion, but I overlooked that for even my favorite author of all over-uses the word hiss. I also found it a bit disconcerting coming across a bit of misplaced words, that only seemed to contradict others, as well as Dante's excessive use of his endearment towards Abby. Now don't get me wrong. I loved the fact that each vampire had a certain endearment for their women. It seems to be a trade mark in the series. Yet Dante's just had me cringing throughout the book. The author could have just had him calling her love, or my love. I would have preferred that. Lover just seemed....wrong.
In all, despite whatever faults, in my opinion this book, as well as the whole series, is well worth reading, with a good creative story line and memorable vampires, each one charismatic in their own way. Even the female characters are very likable, and easily relatable. I especially liked the personality of the female character from the second book. I can't wait until the forth book comes out!

Not bad . . . not great |
As one reviewer stated, it isn't in the same league as Ward/Kenyon/Knight/Feehan, but it also isn't a bad book. I think the author has a pretty good writing style but leaves a lot on the table.
Dante, the primary male character, is a gorgeous hunk of vampire who is enslaved by a coven of witches to protect a female who has become "the Chalice" of a goddess. This is a rich story line! As a lover of vampire/paranormal romance and drama this theme grabbed me. Unfortunately Dante is never really developed as a character. You know very little of his background and his powers are never displayed . . . other than running speed. He is a wonderful lover, but again the scenes aren't scorchers.
The female protagonist, Abby, is a more interesting character who has been molded by a difficult and abusive childhood, but rather than it defeating her it has made her strong. She becomes "the Chalice" accidentally upon the death of her employer. This happens very early in the story and the rest of the story is about her attempt to survive the dark forces that want to see the phoenix within her destroyed so the dark prince can return to once again rule the world.
Truly I think this author has potential and I want to read a few more of her books before passing judgement. When Darkness Comes had a story that could have been great, but was just OK. If you run out of reading material this is a good "filler". Hopefully the next few will see this author's potential realized. I hope so. We need some new, enthralling authors to get our blood pumping. |

New way to say "Vampire" |
Someone recommended this series to me as I was looking for something new to read. I read the reviews and said why not? Well, I am so glad I ordered this book as it is a new twist on the "vampire romance". Love the plot and the heros are to "die" for! Dante is well, every vampire romance junkies dream with his long black hair and warrior body...yum! And Abby is a good mate to him..
Can't wait to read Viper's book, he is my kind of vamp.
You will not be unhappy with this series, pick it up and enjoy. I did! |

It carried me along, just didn't 'WOW' me |
Bottom Line: Try before you buy
Okay, I finished the book so that says something. The story was just okay, and the characters were good, not great...but it didn't make me want to read the rest of the series.
It felt a little, predictable, and a little corny. The book didn't make me laugh out loud or cry or cheer on the main characters. It was just okay. There was nothing incredibly unique or fascinating.
Perhaps because I just didn't connect enough with either the characters or the story? Or maybe it was the style of writing?
I'd recommend Laurell K. Hamilton, Keri Arthur (Riley series), Sunny (Monere series), J.R. Ward, Patricia Briggs (Mercy series), Kim Harrison, for hot vampires.
