Editorial Reviews for  'Guilty'

Product Description
One cold November night when Kat Kominski was fifteen years old, she and some friends held up a convenience store. In the heat of the moment, one of the others shot and killed an off-duty cop moonlighting as a security guard. Kat and her pals fled the scene in a panic, and no one was caught.

Thirteen years later, Kat - now Kate White - has built a new life for herself. Now a single mom with a nine-year-old son, she works as a prosecutor in the Philadelphia DA’s office. But her dark past returns to haunt her when she walks into court one day and has a devastating encounter with a prisoner, Mario Castellanos, one of her companions from that terrible night.

Hardcore criminal Mario is facing a possible sentence of twenty years. He lets Kate know that he is counting on her, his old friend turned prosecutor, to make sure he goes free instead. If Kate doesn’t do what he wants, he’ll claim she was the one who killed the off-duty cop.

Kate is in a bind: If the truth about her past gets out, she stands to lose everything, including her son. But she can’t do what Mario wants, either. As Mario ups his demands, blackmailing and terrorizing her, she is forced to turn for protection to a sexy homicide detective, Tom Braga, who suspects her of…something. The two clash repeatedly as Tom keeps digging into her past, trying to learn the truth.

Then another, far more menacing, threat rears its head, and Kate realizes that her life - and her son’s - are in terrible danger. Frantic, she sees that she has nowhere to turn. Except, maybe, to Tom….

Better Than Obsession
I have to say this was better than her last one but still leaves a little to be desired. Some said the heroine was stupid; I would say she made some really bad decisions. She was a bit annoying in the fact that she lied about everything to her son, to Tom to the police. One could have trust issues with her. The book is a little wordy in descriptions of rooms and places and I skimmed a lot. I really didn't get into the book until the last few chapters. I didn't see the romance between Tom and Kate. It was all pretty rushed. I did like Tom's character and his family and of course Ben. Kate was the only character I wasn't too sure about. Sometimes I could tolerate her and sometimes I just found her annoying. Of course predictibly everything turns out great and the bad guys get caught and everyone lives happily ever after. Not a bad read, just not great. At least it was beliveable as opposed to Obsession which was totally unbeliveable.

Very good book
Not sure why this got such low ratings. 15 years ago Kat was with some friends who held up a convenience store and killed an off-duty cop. Kat reinvented herself as Kate White, has a 9 year old son and is a prosecutor. Her past comes back to haunt her when the man who did the shooting tries to get her to fix his prosecution for his latest crime.

Homicide detective Tom Braga is investigating the murder of a judge and several others in a courtroom. He knows something is not right with Kate but has a hard time convincing her to trust him.

While Kate's decisions were at times not understandable I can't really say what I would do if I were in that exact same position and the same exact person.

Recommendations Bait and one Summer.

Worst Robards book ever -- even worse than Obsession
This book on tape started out pretty interesting, but as it went along there were so many plot holes I wondered if anyone had edited it. The heroine quickly turned out to be an airhead--and a potential murderer. How could a thoughtful reader want this great, sexy hero (the only reason I gave this disaster two stars) to fall in love with a woman who lured her nemesis to her house to kill him--so he couldn't reveal her past "crime" (which she had no part in, for God's sake)??? Her reasoning and ethics throughout the book were seriously flawed, and she was a prosecutor! If I hadn't had to drive for 12 hours I never would have made it through this craziness. After Obsession (which was also completely unrealistic) I thought I'd give this author another chance, but this book has convinced me not to waste my time on her again.

I enjoyed this book
I enjoyed this book and read it in one sitting. I did think that Kat, now Kate could have used better judgement when it came to trusting, homicide detective, Tom Braga. It was obivious that she was lying about what happened when she was held hostage but then of course, Tom had a good reason to dig into her past. Some many times, Karen just used bad judgement and put herself and her young son in danger, but of course that just made the book that much better. I look forward to reading more of this author.

Her Worst Book Yet!
I agree with some of the other reviewers. I usually love Karen's books for the strong, smart heroines, but not so this time. Kate, who is supposed to be streetwise from her childhood spent in foster care, is so stupid it is ridiculous. And, she is a lawyer! How can someone like this make so many stupid mistakes? I listened to the unabridged audio version and sometimes I just had to turn it off for a while, it was so..., well, just plain dumb.
