Whether you’re drawn to chocolate, cookies, potato chips, cheese, or burgers and fries, we all have foods we can’t seem to resist—foods that sabotage our best efforts to lose weight and improve our health.
These foods are winning the battle—but that’s because we’re fighting it in the wrong place. As physician and leading health researcher Dr. Neal Barnard explains in this groundbreaking book, banishing these cravings is not a question of willpower or psychology—it’s a question of biochemistry.
Based on the author’s research and that of other leading investigators at major universities, Breaking the Food Seduction reveals the diet and lifestyle changes that can break these stubborn craving cycles. Using everyday examples, questionnaires, and practical tips, the book delivers:
- Fascinating new insights into the chemical reasons behind your cravings - Seven simple steps to break craving cycles and tame your appetite - Important advice for kids’ sugar cravings and how to halt them - A three-week kick-start program - One hundred delicious, satisfying recipes that help your body break the spell of problem foods and put you on the path to weight loss, better health, and greater well-being

Americancivilwar.com Review |

Why is it so hard to resist the temptation of chocolate? Because chocolate triggers the release of natural opiates in the brain. It's a drug "strong enough to keep us coming back for more," according to nutritional researcher Neal Barnard, M.D., president and founder of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine. Cheese also releases mild opiates during digestion--no wonder we crave it. In Breaking the Food Seduction, Barnard helps you understand and overcome your food cravings. He explains which foods "hook" us the most and why, and what to do to break free when you want to decrease the calories and fat that accompany these seductive foods. Cheese, for example, is about 70 percent saturated fat and has more cholesterol, ounce for ounce, than a steak. Barnard offers seven steps to breaking your food cravings, devoting a chapter to each one, with anecdotes and plenty of clear, sound, practical tips. Then he presents guidelines for healthy eating using "the New Four Food Groups"--vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains--with a three-week menu plan and 113 healthful, vegan recipes. Highly recommended for people who want to understand their food cravings and finally get rid of them. --Joan Price |

Excellent, Thorough and Simple |
I'm a nurse who became vegan after doing a lot of research on nutrition. Dr. Barnard's book contains facts about meat and dairy that I never came across before, some of which are shocking.
The entire book is thorough yet written in a way that even beginners can comprehend.
What sets this book apart for me from other "diet" books is that Dr. Barnard explains the biochemistry of what happens to your brain when the food hits your tongue. Finally, those with food addictions don't have to feel guilty or embarrassed anymore - there is a rational explanation.
This book would be an excellent gift for anyone.
Remember, each time you pick up a fork, you are making a life or death decision! |

A Must Read for anyone searching for REAL solutions! |
|
Dr. Neal Barnard dares to tell the truth about foods that others won't. If you're looking for REAL solutions, this is a MUST READ. His books are VERY revealing and his suggestions/prescriptions actually work!! Don't pass this up! They will absolutely change the way you look and feel, and the way you think about food. I've only just begun to incorporate his suggestions, and the weight is dropping off like I've never experienced before! This is the best I've felt in years!! I recommend "Foods that Fight Pain," and "Foods That Cause You to Lose Weight." If you're ready to face the truth about food and how it really affects you, I encourage you to trust Dr. Barnard as a true health expert! Keep them coming, Dr. Barnard - I'm waiting for your next book! |

same information as so many other books |
This book was a fast read, and mainly talked about a low GI diet. Somehow I was hoping to hear something new and different from other books I have read.
It was worth the read. |
